Snyder’s endorsement of Roberts is greeted with backlash
K-State Collegian ^ | 11/3/14 | Austin Earl

Outside of K-State’s No. 9 ranking in the inaugural College Football Playoff rankings, K-State head football coach Bill Snyder made headlines in an equally negative way.

Last Thursday, Snyder was featured in incumbent senatorial candidate Pat Roberts’ campaign commercial. Since then he has said that he would like the ad removed.

“I made a mistake,” Snyder said after Saturday night’s 48-14 win over the Cowboys. “I’m not going to delve into it, exactly how everything happened. But I made a mistake and I embarrassed our university. That’s my responsibility and my error. That’s my fault and nobody else’s.”

In the advertisement, Snyder said that he will be voting for his good friend Roberts. K-State president Kirk Schulz said that Snyder did know that his comments would air publicly.

The commercial created questions about what public university figures can use their power for. The dueling perspectives circle around whether someone like Snyder can be public in their political views.

Schulz said that the Roberts’ campaign declined to remove the ad. According to an article published by the Topeka Capital Journal on Saturday, Roberts’ campaign denied that they were requested to do so.

“I have spoken about the issue,” Snyder said. “I apologized, I made a blunder, major mistake. I hurt the university, I accept the responsibility for it. Would I want the ads removed? Yes.”

Roberts, a graduate of K-State, is running against independent candidate Greg Orman in a highly-contested race. If Roberts wins, it would be his fourth term in the U.S. Senate.

Somehow I doubt there would be push back if he would endorse an Obamafile.

This is what democrats do, try to destroy people for their political opinions and views.

No doubt they would like to get him fired as head coach for being “evil” and supporting a republican.

But clearly he felt the backlash. This is also what Democrats mean when they send people letters telling them “we know if you vote or not”. They hope the low-information people they target will think they mean “we know WHO you voted for”, and will remember how even the President of a major company can be fired for going against the left.

It’s stupid for a public figure to take a public political stance. 1/2 of your customer base will hate you for it.

You are exactly right. The Roberts camp should do the right thing and take the ad off the air.

POed KU fans?

Probably since KU is located in that liberal bastion called Lawrence (Douglas county).

Kansas State is pretty conservative as universities go so I think they would. They don't get the uber-liberals that KU gets.

The article said they had not been ASKED to take if off the air.

It takes a day to get something pulled and replaced, so if they weren’t asked yet, it was not fair to expect they had already done it.

I am not in favor of college football coaches endorsing political candidates. However, I am pretty sure that if he has endorsed the Dem candidate we would not be seeing this flap. And I am Very angry that he said his decision “embarrassed the university.” Why?

When Lou Holtz was at Arkansas he appeared in an ad for Jesse Helms. It wasn’t long before he “resigned” because he was burnt out. Then he immediately took the job a Minnesota.

If he had endorsed Obama or some commie, they would throw roses at him and the press would declare him to be “outspoken” and “courageous.”

It wouldn’t surprise me if the outrage behind this is coming from demoncrat underground and/or daily kosmunists. The reason being is one of the local TV stations ran a story where they quoted daily kos as finding where Snyder asked Roberts to pull the ad.

I’ve suspected all along the DUmmies and KOSmunists have been doing a lot of stuff here behind the scenes, like hitting the local message boards and comment sections, in order to influence Kansas elections. I hope people don’t buy in to their crap. It just makes me want to reject their BS even more.

In the advertisement, Snyder said that he will be voting for his good friend Roberts. K-State president Kirk Schulz said that Snyder did know that his comments would air publicly.

This I don't believe. Coach Snyder has been around enough microphones and cameras in his career to know that anything you say or do in front of them is going to be made public. How many times have we on FR ridiculed air-head young girls who have stated that she "didn't think her boyfriend would share those photographs"?

Although I agree with his endorsement of Roberts, I couldn't care less what someone who spends 24 hours a day studying football film has to say about a political issue.

I have 3 cousins, who are very conservative and are graduates of KSU. Thanks for the feedback.
