Sugary drink tax measure fails (San Francisco)

Proposition E, a 2 cent per ounce tax on the purchase of sugary beverages that was heavily opposed by the American Beverage Association, was defeated at the polls Tuesday when fewer than two-thirds of voters supported the proposal.

The tax was proposed to combat health-related illnesses like obesity and diabetes. It drew the support of the majority of the Board of Supervisors, which voted to place it on the ballot, and a number of health organizations, such as the American Heart Association and the California Dental Association.

The American Beverage Association, which represents the large soda companies, had raised $7.7 million as of Sept. 30 to oppose the measure. The group's campaign had seized upon San Francisco's rising cost of living and growing income inequality, and had suggested in ads that the tax would increase the cost of groceries and meals at restaurants.

Take That, Mr. Bloomberg! Even my friends near UC Berkeley didn’t want this measure. We all see it as Tax-Creep. It starts with a penny, and ends a year later as One Dollar and a penny.

I wonder if a tax on sodomy would help cut down on AIDS?

In contrast, the similar (though not identical) Measure D in Berkeley is winning handily.

Supervisor Scott Wiener, one of the most outspoken supporters of the soda tax, looked at Tuesday election results in a positive light despite losing. “The soda industry got a double black eye today,” Wiener said. “While we didn’t get to ⅔, a majority of voters supported the soda tax despite $10 million in corporate spending against it. No city has ever even gotten close to a majority vote, and tonight Berkeley won in a landslide and San Francisco got a majority.” …
Can anyone say “delusional”? Must be the Truvada.

Even San Fran has to poke back at the nanny state tonight, even if they can only manage this.

Typical schlock journalism doesn’t give the vote-count up front. Less than 2/3. So maybe more than 1/2.

It would add a new horror to audits.

I'm reminded of this September news article. This "San Francisco lawmaker" is Scott Wiener--the very same Scott Wiener behind this Proposition E.

San Francisco lawmaker says he takes anti-HIV drug, urges wider use

A hearing is scheduled for Thursday to investigate the city's efforts to provide the treatment more widely and discuss whether the drug could be made available to all city residents for free, regardless of income.

Yes!

And the ballot question here that would have required a deposit on every bottle or can failed. Thank God!
