NEW ORLEANS, LA (WDSU) -- Democrat incumbent Sen. Mary Landrieu and Republican opponent Bill Cassidy are headed to a runoff election in the race for the Senate seat.
Landrieu is campaigning on her seniority and record as a job creator and a lawmaker who will put Louisiana first over politics. She remained optimistic despite a letdown on election night.
She said running one-on-one against Cassidy is the race she "always wanted" and challenged him to six debates before the Dec. 6 runoff. Landrieu and her supporters unveiled a new slogan going into the runoff, "Where was Bill?" -- a clear attempt to stack up her experience during some of Louisiana's most trying times.
Cassidy did not make any public appearances on Election Day. Instead, he worked the phone bank to make sure his supporters go to the polls.
The 57-year-old physician spent last few days campaigning on his home turf.
Monday, Cassidy went door-to-door in the neighborhood he grew up in soliciting votes. Over the weekend, he campaigned with the Northshore Tea Party and conservative favorite Dr. Ben Carson.
Cassidy's strategy this campaign season was to frame this Senate race around President Barack Obama. The Cassidy camp has made a large media push to tie Landrieu to Obama, who does not enjoy wide popularity in the state.
Cassidy's message is that Landrieu is out of touch with Louisiana values and in turn voters.
Some have been critical of Cassidy for not participating in many debates this campaign season. However, the Cassidy camp has made inroads with voters. Pollsters say the race is a virtual dead heat with national implications.
Col. Rob Maness (R) didn't survive without enough votes. He was hopeful as last-minute voters head to the polls.

Cassidy took 40.96 percent of the vote and Landrieu took 42.09 percent. A second Republican in the race, retired Air Force Col. Rob Maness, claimed enough votes 13.76 percent to keep either Landrieu or Cassidy from topping the 50 percent mark. Five other candidates split the rest of the vote.
Sink a fork in her; she’s done.
All the GOP candidates got a majority of the vote.
If the Republicans stick together, they will soundly defeat Landrieu next month.
Oh Please!!!! Landrieu always wanted a one on one election? Are we supposed to believe that Landrieu expected this runoff, and wanted to have a runoff election to win re-election?
Sometimes Democrats really insult our intelligence with what they say and do.
at the poker table, we call this a freeroll.
Mary Loser could barely scrape 40% against a crowded field.
For an incumbent, its a terrible number.
Since we know that the GOP will control the Senate, regardless of what happens in this runoff, how much national attention, funding, etc. will the Democrats put into this race?
Mary got barely 40% in the first round. It’s hard to believe that she is going to get 50% plus 1 in the runoff round.
I like this. The candidate must get 50% to win. In Virginia, we just had a spoiler, AGAIN!, keep a Republican out of office. We need to switch to the runoff method.
So, will Maness and his supporters pout or will they get on board to defeat Miss Piggy?
Buh-bye.
That pitiful hag will have a break down when she loses. What normal person would want her racist butt re elected awww yes the racist blacks that collect money from the government..
What is it about lib women that makes them so undeniably stupid?
And what is it about conservative women that makes them sharp and such believable leaders?
This article looks like it was taken directly from Pantsuit Mary’s campaign release.

Landrieu Should Concede Today
By Walter Abbott
Rather than put the State of Louisiana through four more weeks of TV ads, and a campaign that will be nothing but mud slinging, Mary Landrieu should do the honorable thing and concede to Bill Cassidy.
She cant win. It cant happen. No way. None. Cassidy came within a handful of votes of out-polling Landrieu.
Its time to move on and begin the healing process for our state.
9:10 AM Edited to add:
We can guarantee you wont hear the first Louisiana newspaper or TV station editorialize on this issue. They all WANT a runoff. Why, you ask?
Money. Advertising dollars. They do what they do to make money. Remember that the next time some editorial writer or TV talking head tries to claim the moral high ground on some issue.
Locally you can FEEL the frustration. I would give a lot to hear Landrieu behind closed doors this morning. No way she believed she wouldn’t win outright. Problem is- her people- inner city blacks- didn’t turn out as expected. Make no mistake, she is SEETHING. Now the ‘dead vote’ and ‘buy votes’ campaign goes into high gear. Don’t count her out- this is Louisiana where an 86 year old FELON is in a runoff for Congress.
I kinda like the nickname I picked up here on FR the last couple of days: "Babyfat"...
"Vote for me, all you racist and misogynistic people who elected me three times before, so that I can do a whole lot for you as the ranking member of the Energy committee.."
Now we’re going to find out exactly how much Landrieu REALLY hates Obama. /s
The bad news for her is the Democrats aren’t going to spend a lot of money to save her seat.
She can’t help them hold the majority. Yup, she’ll be tossed right under the bus.
I won’t count her out she will have Soro’s with his billions of money to help her and have Obama and Holder get the voters she needs.with their uneducated blacks and felons they will get her 100% OF THE VOTES..
One thing for sure she can’t do a thing about the Republican win..
