John Cornyn is the even-keeled insider. Ted Cruz is the brash, ambitious bomb-thrower.
The GOP takeover of the Senate last week puts the two Texas Republicans in a white-hot spotlight and potentially a collision course.
As deputy majority leader, Cornyns main task will be to keep the party unified behind an agenda and strategy set by the incoming majority leader, Mitch McConnell of Kentucky. Cruz, by contrast, wouldnt even pledge to support McConnell for the leadership post, before or after Tuesday nights sweeping victory.
Teds going to be a leader. Hes not just going to be an agitator, said Ralph Reed, chairman of the Faith and Freedom coalition and a longtime Cruz friend. But sometimes to become a leader, youve got to rattle the cage.
The friction Cruz has caused in the Senate has been so overt, McConnell made light of it the day after the elections. Speaking in Louisville, Ky., he mentioned four people whod called with congratulations. Apart from House Speaker John Boehner, it sounded like a list of adversaries, including a chastened president, a deposed majority leader, and an unruly backbencher.
I got a call from the president. Also Senator [Harry] Reid, and the speaker, and Ted Cruz, too. I thought youd be interested, McConnell told reporters, drawing chuckles. All of them have the view that we ought to see what areas of agreement there are and see if we can make some progress for the country.
Cruz has made efforts in recent months to ingratiate himself with colleagues he irritated in the first 18 months of his tenure. He stumped for Senate nominees in key races in Iowa, Georgia and Kansas, all of whom won. He made a long trip last weekend to Alaska to stump for Republican Dan Sullivan....

One is the ultimate insider and the other is out to return the GOP to it's real roots. That sums up the difference in a nutshell.
“Ted Cruz is the brash, ambitious bomb-thrower.”
Hmmm... Most of us would go with “truth teller”. Or, “bold, honest representative of the people”.
Just sayin’
This screed is loaded with weasel words like “bomb thrower.”
Cornrow is a DemocRat.
Interesting take on how the left sees Cruz and the Senate. I see a change in the MSM in it’s description of Cruz and conservatives in general. Maybe they realize they have to be less partisan to survive.
Ted Cruz really should run for ML.
Just the reaction on O’bummer’s face would be worth it.
“This newspaper is not the most conservative in the nation, if you’re not familiar with them.”
The newspaper hasn’t been remotely conservative since the 1980s. In the mid-1990s, they got leftist Ron Kirk into the Dallas Mayor’s office based on his skin color (he was their legal counsel at one point) and heavily favored Abortion Barbie this gubernatorial election until she self-imploded.
The newspaper is also a big supporter of Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins, the idiot who botched Ebola and tried to smuggle in 2,000 Central American illegals into Dallas housing before a public uproar stopped it a few months ago.
Ted Cruz: ‘Under no circumstances’ will I run for majority leader

I missed that...too bad. Well Ted has only 2 years in Senate so he may not get the votes of many senators. But Sessions can win if he runs, and would be huge improvement over the Kentucky Turtle.
I hope Crun gets elected President.
Well, there's your dictatorial Problem right there....
I haven't heard "bomb thrower" since 1994, when the MSM applied it to Newt Gingrich. Gary Trudeau even depicted him as a bomb with a lit fuse in his "Doonesbury" strip.
