WASHINGTON Senate Democrats, by a single vote, stopped legislation that would have approved construction of the Keystone XL pipeline, one of the most fractious and expensive battles of the Obama presidency.
The vote represented a victory for the environmental movement, but the fight had taken on larger dimensions as a proxy war between Republicans, who argued that the project was vital for job creation, and President Obama, who had delayed a decision on building it.
Senator Mary L. Landrieu, Democrat of Louisiana, who is facing a runoff election Dec. 6, had pleaded with her colleagues throughout the day to support the pipeline, leading to a rare suspense-filled roll call in the Senate. But she was ultimately rebuffed and fell short by one. The bill was defeated with 59 votes in favor and 41 against, and Ms. Landrieu needing 60 votes to proceed.
The vote was also a reflection of how a once-obscure pipeline blew up into an expensive national political battle between environmentalists and the oil industry. Although the TransCanada company proposed the pipeline in 2005, it generated so little attention that Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton was poised to approve it in 2011 with little fanfare.

With 59 in favor in this current Senate, I think if the next Senate takes this same vote up again next year, we might have enough votes to override a veto.
Interesting to see new Dem “superstar” Fauxcahontas announcing the vote tabulation....
So where does this leave Mary Landrieu? The whole point of this was to prove to low information voters in Louisiana that she was in favor of the pipeline to help Louisiana’s energy industry. And that she had clout to make it happen, etc. as we lead up to the Dec. 6th runoff. So where does this leave her? She clearly has no such clout, and if she wins the runoff she will be in the Democrat minority anyway. What does this show voters as to why they should re-elect her???
there’s that compromise and working together the democrats have been demanding we have to have with them. /s
I noticed that too. She seems to be getting a lot more face time in front of the cameras these days. Think the Clintonistas are taking note of it too.
Circling the drain. BTT
Probably not. Some DEMs who voted Yes (Landrieu, Hagan) have been replaced by the GOP. No real gains there.
Get the butter and jam out because Landrieu is toast!
They let their Kenyan Child of the Eurf off the hook. The boy doesn’t have to veto it. IN YOUR FACE AMERICA! - Barry the Kenyan.

I guess Mary officially has a new career as a Washington lobbyist...
Harkin (nay) replaced by a very pro KXL Ernst.
There are more.
“So where does this leave Mary Landrieu?”
Under the bus where she was thrown. Up schit Creek. Drowning in Blue Bayou.
In fact this is the second time since the election, the Democrats have dumped on Mary Landrieu.
First, they quit spending money on ads and now this. Maybe they like her even less than the the GOP does.
You are right about her trying to show her clout. The real interesting part is Cassidy is the one that introduced the bill in the House. I guess that could be used to show the Low Information Voter where the clout is.
Johnson, and Udall (CO)
I changed my mind regarding my Post #2 above.
With 54 Republicans who will definitely vote for the pipeline, we will need 13 Democrats to join the yes vote in order to override the expected Obama veto.
Looking at the Democrats who voted Yes and subtracting those who will be gone next year (i.e. Landrieu and Hagen ), we only have 10 votes. Three short needed to override the veto.
The Democrats who voted yea and who will join to override are:
Bennet (D-CO)
Carper (D-DE)
Casey (D-PA)
Donnelly (D-IN)
Heitkamp (D-ND)
Manchin (D-WV)
McCaskill (D-MO)
Tester (D-MT)
Walsh (D-MT)
Warner (D-VA)
Add one more. Udall of Colorado will be replaced by Cory Gardner. That could maybe, possibly add up to 60.
King could have been #60 if he really wanted to think about switching parties; that was all smoke and mirrors as well.
