Congress should not invite Obama to give the State of the Union Address
November 20, 2014 | me

During much of American history, the President informed Congress of the State of the Union in writing. The Constitution does not mandate that the President give a State of the Union Address to a joint session of Congress. Even under a normal president, the SOTU is a spectacle that elevates the President above Congress and the Supreme Court, which should not be done. Some Supreme Court justices no longer attend the SOTU, partly for this reason. We don't have a normal president but one who acts like he is king. Congress should simply not invite Obama to give the SOTU before a joint session. He is free to give a speech from another venue.

Democrats will scream that the President is being disrespected. That's the point. Congress should not show deference to a rogue president.

It should be boycotted. Let him talk to a near empty room.

They should invite him as usual but tell him the address is 901 D ST SE Washington, DC. What color should he have to be dressed in?

It would not be an empty room, because the Rats would attend.

The State of the Union communication is a Constitutional requirement but a Speech is not specified. He can deliver it in an email. Congress can simply not schedule a speech.

Monarchs and despots are not synonymous.

Most presidents didn’t deliver one in person.

There is no requirement for it. Not that most people even watch it anyway.

Monarchs and despots are not synonymous.

In a Republic that provides for neither, they are synonymous.

That would be find if the Rats attend. 0bama craves attention and having a much reduced attendance and virtually no broadcast would be very fitting.

Excellent idea. Boehner has the option not to invite him to the House chambers, could simply ask for a written report. No doubt he will follow the usual practice, however.

This would require backbone, none of which resides on the Republican side of the aisle.

That’s like letting the JWs in, and then expressing your disapproval of their tracts by walking out the back door.
It’s Congress’ room. They don’t have to let him in.

The Republicans could turn their back on him as he is speaking. And catcalls from the gallery, “You Lie!” every time he tells a whopper.

If —and this is admittedly a fantasy if— IF several would say out loud, like one man has done, that Obarray lies, well, let the scumbag in to make a fool of himself.

I like this idea. We should call the Sinators and Reps about this.

Don't give bammy the big stage just so he can trash conservative ideas.

We won't have to hear, "Mr. Speaker, the President of the United States...." and then see all the glad handing that goes on.

I like it.

Agreed. He doesn’t believe in a union of States or our constitution so what would he be doing there except bloviating.

Disrespect for Obama has been well earned.
The new congress should ignore him as much as they can.
