Ferguson businesses torched in overnight protests

Smoke billowed from burned-out buildings and sidewalks were strewn with broken glass Tuesday morning after Ferguson erupted over a grand jury's decision not to indict a white police officer in the killing of unarmed black 18-year-old Michael Brown.

Firefighters were dousing the blackened remains of some businesses and at least one was still ablaze. Some Ferguson stores that weren't burned had smashed display windows, but the streets of the St. Louis suburb were mostly clear.

Monday night's protests were far more destructive than any of those that followed Brown's Aug. 9 death, with more than a dozen businesses badly damaged or destroyed. Authorities reported hearing hundreds of gunshots, which for a time prevented fire crews from fighting the flames.

They torched an Advance Auto Parts store. I wonder how many employees now have no job. Happy Thanksgiving and Merry Christmas

For that franchisee and his staff, "black friday" has a very different meaning.

“Everything they had went up in smoke”

And, sadly, probably even more. I would assume many, if not all, still owe money on their retail space, inventory, outstanding bills, etc.

I read that comment. I’ll replace that lost vote!

Once upon a time it was generally understood that, “Looters will be shot.”

Yep. Most contracts are null and void for riots and wars. They would have had to explicitly request riot insurance. And who the heck would underwrite that in a US city right now ?

Yup. Those well off enough will probably leave Ferguson and never look back.

You’ll have a rapidly decaying community that looks like Detroit with no tax base to support it.

No one in their mind will want to buy a home there.

Bets on when the city will file for bankruptcy?

The irony is these are blacks who employed fellow blacks.

They burned a beauty shop which I believe was black owned. Can you imagine a business more a part of a black community than a Local beauty shop? Now the owners and employees will have no Christmas.

There was also looting at Walgreen’s, o reilly auto parts, Little Cesar’s pizza. Maybe some other national chains, plus numerous local businesses. How many businesses will rebuild? I can easily imagine the national chains pulling out saying Ferguson isn’t worth being located in. And then the liberals and race baiters will go after then for not rebuilding. In today’s politically correct world, they can’t win no matter what they do.

No mainstream insurance company writes riot insurance.

America’s urban wastelands still haven’t recovered decades after the 1960s riots.

Blackened buildings, shuttered businesses and empty homes testify to the death spiral triggered when rioters torched everything in sight.

Ferguson is about to experience the same agony. I don’t think they’ll be able to be back to where they were before Monday night.

If I were a business owner there, I would have left after the LAST set of riots/burnings

I'd imagine some of the small business owners didn't bother with insurance. For those that did, this might be a blessing in disguise. Ferguson is OVER as a functioning community. If they're burned out, they'll have the insurance money to start elsewhere. The ones I feel sorry for are the ones who have insurance and weren't burned out.

It was reported that many of the businesses that were looted and trashed were minority-owned. So people should remember that when swinish race pimps like Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, et al start talking about “social justice!”

Insurance covers that which actuaries/statisticians can assign a probability. Insurance doesn't cover civil unrest because its probability estimate is unknown.

So that the lawless can have some barbarian fun, the lawful are ruined into homelessness.

Corporate planning will once again include red lining.

Ferguson was the first stop out of the inner city, the perimeter.

Now the black first stops will be red lined as too risky. Profitability is threatened by destruction of the facilities.

And just exactly, why wasn’t the National Guard called out? If we don’t use the NG for anything but earthquakes, tidal waves, and hurricanes, we just keep on pissin’ away more and more tax money on an unreliable service. Replace the National Guard with autonomous civilian militias. They would get the job done without the bureaucratic BS.

It was dying long before anyone ever heard of Michael Brown or Darren Wilson.

Yeah, today's liberalism on display and what it leads to.

It's decades of democrats promising minorities to put their trust in to them for prosperity. Keep voting for democrats and keeping them in power and they will take care of you. It's all a huge lie and this is the result of reality when that carrot is never achieved.

These people of Ferguson and around the country need to be mad at years of failed democrat leadership and a failed ideology. We can only hope this opens more American's eyes to the big lie that today's liberalism really is.

Yeah, if you were in an area that you needed it, there’s no way you could ever afford it.

It’s sickening. Those thugs have no idea the capital it takes to start a business and how hard it is to get it off the ground. Now these business owners are left with a nearly worthless burned down commercial property (I’m sure they’ll also be on the hook for cleanup) and, most likely, not enough capital to start again.
