I'm not sure the country is quite ready for a total cancellation of the State of the Union much as i feel it justified. But how about a compromise and ask that the President come and give it during the daytime? In the UK the Queen's Speech to the Opening of Parliament (which is the closest equivalent to the SOTU) is held during the daytime.
It would definitely annoy the White House to not get their 3 hours of night time spotlight but there's nothing unreasonable about moving this speech to the daytime. It would save money (don't have to pay staff overtime) and stimulate the economy (broadcast networks can run their regular entertainment programs). Thoughts?

Congress doesn’t have to invite President. Until FDR, President submitted a handwritten State of union. If Boehner had any balls, he would do the same.
i doesnt even have to be a speech. it simply needs to be reported to Congress.
i would prefer it be a state of the union report and not a pep rally.

Originally the SOTU was just a written report.
Now it has turned into a Hollywood Gala for the in party to preen and prance for the cameras and for the president to spin and pat himself on the back.
It has become worthless as a source of factual information and is a waste of time and money.
There is no requirement to even invite the POS Kenyan to speak and they shouldn’t. The requirement is to submit SOTU in writing.
Screw him GOP, grow some balls and don’t invite him.
The Constitution requires the President to send Congress a message from time to time. No mention of a speech at all, and nothing about its being an annual message, either.
There should be NO INVITATION from Congress—this year or any year. Time to start putting the Presidant back in his little box where he belongs.
Washington went to congress for the first SOTU in person address and was so disrespected by congress that he never went back.
I agree the Dear Leader wants his prime time, and I think if the SOTU were entirely cancelled the networks would give him his 3 hours and make a spectacle out of him going to Nationals Park or whatever to give an “unofficial” SOTU. A daytime scheduled SOTU he’d have no grounds for refusing. What, you’re not in DC able to come to Congress during a business day?

Definitely a waste of time and money. Yes it should go back to handwritten. Maybe if he has to give it in the day time it will just be emailed in.
The Constitution [Article II, Section 3] requires that you "shall from time to time give to Congress information of the State of the Union." However, there being no requirement for you to actually appear before the chambers [whose rules and schedules we control] to give an address, we politely decline inviting you to make a speech.
Instead we would ask, in light of your recent actions, that you instead spend the evening reading the rest of Section 3, and give particular notice to the part that reads: "he shall take care that the laws be faithfully executed."
It's a very short paragraph, and who knows? You might even learn something.

The only people more excited about SOTU than Congress and the President are the media.
It is an exercise in confirming the groupthink among the DC swamp people regardless of party. It also makes a mockery of separation of powers. It should require extreme circumstances for the executive and the Supreme Court to visit the Capitol.
The pantomime (admittedly instituted by Team Reagan) that constitutes the modern SOTU is revolting from the rah-rah introductions to the choreographed condescending nod to Joe or Jane Average in the balcony seated at the right hand of the Holy First Lady.
George Will has railed against this farce but network and cable newsies desperate for ratings and relevance treat it like the Super Bowl despite any living person’s inability to recall a single thing from any SOTU (except, perhaps, Joe Wilson’s Parliamentary riposte).
You can always turn it off....there are so many other available options that watching it is OPTIONAL! And, right now, I’d say many will NOT bother.

Teddy Roosevelt was still alive and was mad that it had never occurred to him to do that (he always wanted to be the center of attention).
