Krauthammer: Decision not to indict NYPD officer 'totally incomprehensible'

Charles Krauthammer said Wednesday on "Special Report with Bret Baier" that a grand jury's decision not to indict a New York City police officer in the death of Eric Garner, an unarmed black man who died in July after the officer placed him in a chokehold, is "totally incomprehensible."

"It looks like they at least might have indicted him on something like involuntary manslaughter at the very least," Krauthammer, a syndicated columnist and Fox News contributor, said. "The guy was unarmed, and the crime was petty as they come. He was selling loose cigarettes, which in and of itself is almost absurd that somebody has to die over that."

He isn’t constricting the man’s windpipe with either arm.

The coroner appears to have disagreed with your findings.

The perp was resisting arrest. Even the edited video showed him not obeying the office. What was the officer to do? Give the perp his business card and ask the perp to self-report back at the station at his own convenience?

Exactly right.

I blame NY taxes for this silly arrest anyway.

I agree. If you want to indict someone, indict the long lines of morons who spend all day thinking up new taxes.

And (keeping in mind a life was taken) we cannot forget that this all occurred because if a stupid CIGARETTE law. Such ridiculous laws have no place in a free society. It all comes down to tax $.

I can understand why some would side with Krauthammer but count me out on this one. He is wrong here...

Not me. The COPS screwed up on this one. Way too much use of force.

The grand jury says your full of it.

He may have acted legally but I don’t agree with him taking such aggressive action. I made such comments months ago when the video first came out.

And, personally, I think you’re (not your) full of it to post in such an immature manner. It’s okay to disagree but there is no need to be uncivil.

Funny how this guy was able to sneak onto Staten Island every day and secretly listen to the testimony in the grand jury room. But he must have since he KNOWS that the no bill was a mistake. How could Garner say “I can’t breath” if he was in a choke hold?

Kind of an analogy is the case of vehicular negligent homicide. You are driving your car legally until your actions result in the death of another person. No intent obviously, but the death accidentally happened due your actions.

The rub of the case though, would be whether the actions of the police resulted in the demise of Garner. I think the coroner's report collaborated that, so I am surprised at least some kind of charge was not applied to the cop in question.

Just another case of unnecessary escalation. Why didn’t they just give the guy a ticket? Mail it to him. It’s ridiculous.

Hey Kraut, why don’t you stick to psychology, baseball and why Romney is the best thing since sliced bread.

The Grand Jury looked at all of the evidence and the cops did what they were trained to do. I agree with Barkley.

Pray America is waking

My thoughts exactly. Freepers get more upset over cops killing dogs (which I do, too) than killing Eric Garner for allegedly selling loose cigarettes. I have lived in places where it is common to walk into a convenient store and see single cigarettes in a basket on the counter for sale. I never thought it was a big deal - certainly nothing worthy of dying for.

"reminded me of the Lilliputians"

There was a time when police officers had to be a certain height, you know, when common sense was more common.

I'm not sure I see a crime being committed in that video but it could be argued that police negligence was involved.Yes,the guy was resisting but still....

IMO the family of *this* guy has more justification in pointing a finger at others than do the families of the "Gentle Giant" or Saint Trayvon.

One thing worth noting is that this "Kraut" is a graduate of Harvard Medical School. That fact alone would,IMO,give him a degree of credibility in this matter that you and I lack (assuming that you, too, never attended medical school).

We ask the Police to enforce the Laws.
If the accused resists arrest, the Police can, and should, escalate force to apply the Law.

The guy was selling cigarettes and not charging State Tax.

The Police were enforcing a pissant Law so the State does not lose cigarette tax revenue.

A lot of these Progressive laws, designed to limit Liberty, should be struck from the books.

That’s how 0bama treats the illegal tresspassers.

Maybe that’s how 0bama and Holder want to arrest all Criminals.

I would love a business card, and suggestion to turn myself in, instead of a ticket for speeding.

“I agree its completely different than with Brown.,”

Yes. Very bad. Killed for what? Selling single cigarettes or not paying taxes on said “singles”?

This brazenness is on par with the SS; te me it’s not.

He graduated in psychology from the Medical school, not physical medicine. He is not a medical doctor and so what if he graduated decades ago, what insight does he have?
