UAE Media Debate Burqa Ban Following Brutal Stabbing of American Teacher in Abu Dhabi

For the first time in history, and in the wake of the December 1st stabbing death of an American teacher in Abu Dhabi by a woman wearing a burqa, Gulf region media are questioning whether the burqa is a security risk.

Historically, other Muslim and Arab governments, as well as feminist activists, have not only questioned the burqa—they have also abolished it. Such countries include Turkey, Egypt, the Maghreb, Iran, and Afghanistan. Educated Muslim women living in large cities in these countries went unveiled for at least 100 years. However, Saudi Arabia and environs, and rural regions in the Arab and Muslim world, have never really abandoned the Islamic Veil. It has now returned with a vengeance across the Middle East, Central Asia, and parts of Africa.

Thus, it is somewhat amazing and a welcome relief that some newspapers in the UAE are wondering whether the burqa should not be worn “for security reasons.” One journalist titled his piece succinctly: “The Niqab Crime, and the Niqab is a Crime.”

They can wear jewelry and nail polish - but can’t show their faces? Never realized that.

That murder was REALLY horrific.

In the American west, unless you were in the middle of a dust storm, even a bandanna over the face was enough to arouse suspicion.

The Muslim Brotherhood has, in its published charter, admitted that they will destroy the United States by using our own freedoms against us, and their buddy in the WH is doing his best.

Long nails would be a useful defense tool in an encounter with an aggressive male.

Sensible people have been saying that the savage-breeders should shed the face covering. No one listened.

No. They found someone. There was never any question they’d find someone. The UAE needs to demonstrate that they are a safe place for the world’s rich and famous. I hope it was the right someone.

Having traveled there several times (the most recent being last month) I know a *little* bit about it.Long story short,in a country where there's a mosque every 30 yards and where many of the women you see even in upscale,”Westernized”,places like the Dubai Mall wearing those black burlap sacks from head to toe it's difficult for me to imagine the government banning those sacks.

From the book “In Conquest Born”, “We recognize that in man’s nature there is a drive to oppress others, ... Perhaps the true measure of his power is how openly he can indulge in this.”
The degree to which the women are veiled is a direct measure of how oppressed the women are.

“”How do they even know if the attacker was really a woman?””

They don’t - check out the fingers on that first woman (?). Those aren’t the fingers of a woman unless she’s a giant! Something tells me that these women are so ugly that everyone should be grateful their faces are covered. Probably their husbands are!!!! One sack, two sacks etc.

“”it’s difficult for me to imagine the government banning those sacks.””

Why? They don’t want to see what’s under them any more than anyone else does?
