I agree. Tragically just this weekend there were 3 "high-profile police killings". Three police officers were killed while performing their duty to the public by 2 thugs.

The best data I have found is surprisingly from a Mother Jones article trying to demonstrate that cops pick on blacks disproportionately. The article's author admitted that she couldn't demonstrate it, but that didn't stop her from concluding it is a big problem.

She included a table that shows all deaths during arrest by year, including the race/color of the dead perp. I used the data from 2003-2009, so there wouldn't be any single year anomalies. I calculated the percentages of death by race, and compared it with percentage of population by race in the three largest cities, NYC, LA, and CHI, since most arrest-related deaths are expected to occur in big cities. Here's the result:

In Mobile, Alabama, a black cop shot and killed an unarmed white teenager. As with Michael Brown, the Alabama teen was later found to have been under the influence of marijuana at the time of the shooting. The teen had also recently taken a hallucinogen, and was so stoned he thought he was on fire -- and literally took his clothes off. Nude -- and obviously unarmed -- he was still later shot by the cop. Despite public pressure, a Mobile grand jury decided not to indict the black police officer, believing he acted in self-defense. Not national news.

In Salt Lake City, Utah, just two days after Brown was shot and killed in Ferguson, a "not white" cop shot and killed an unarmed 20-year-old man whose race has been described as Hispanic. The family of the dead man believes that the cop is a murderer. Not national news.

And not right either.
