Fox News, Fox Business Channels Go Dark On Dish As Carriage Talks Stall
DEADLINE | HOLLYWOOD ^ | December 20, 2014 10:03pm | Lisa de Moraes

Posted on 12/22/2014 11:24:22 AM PST by Utilizer

21st Century Fox and Dish pointed the finger at each other tonight as carriage talks between the two failed to produce a deal by midnight, resulting in Fox News Channel and Fox Business Channel no longer being available on Dish. Both sides blamed the other for the shutdowns.

“It is disappointing that, after nearly two decades without a blackout, Fox News Channel has been blocked by Dish Network,” Tim Carry, EVP Distribution at Fox News Channel said late tonight. “We care deeply about our viewers and hope that they will regain access to the number one cable news channel soon. We will continue to work around the clock to reach an agreement with Dish, as we have done with every other pay-TV provider for 18 years. This is the third time in as many months that Dish customers have suffered through a blackout due toDish intransigence. Dish’s record speaks for itself, and makes its rhetoric about ‘reasonable’ agreements ring hollow.”

I just had DISH installed today from Direct. I hardly watch TV anymore. I called DISH in my more than perturbed state about FOX. The guy on the other end said he knew Fox was popular but didn’t realize how popular given all the calls. I also put in a request that they have TCT Christian Television on their line up. If you are so inclined, please make that request as well if you are calling DISH. Thanks

Progressive owned and progressive operated news casts and Newsmen and women like CNN, ABC, CBS, NBC. They are like Hitler’s Brownshirts doing what their boss wants. In this case they pimp and shout Obama’s crap.

Update:

My son (he works for DISH) explained this is a negotiating war between DISH and Fox.

Fox has increased their rates to DISH and wants to lump all sports in with all FOX channels. DISH has two separate contracts and is balking at both the new rates and the lumping together.

This will play out in time. meanwhile keep up the complaints!!

I think Fox is making a mistake charging more for companies to carry their channels when they can instead charge their advertising time much more instead by justifying it with their very high and increasing all the time viewership.

At the very least only a minimal increase might be considered to help with operating expenses, but really the less it costs to carry Fox the more carriers will see them as a viable and sought-after option for their lineup.

It is not entirely Dish’s fault. According to reports, Fox is tripling (roughly) their current rates, and wouldn’t you balk if the standard cost for something was tripled when you next went to procure it?

Do not blame Dish only for this, please. Read more in the links and comments above. Not saying Dish is perfect, but try to look at the whole situation before coming to any conclusions.

I just hoisted my off-the-air outdoor broadcast antenna another five feet into the air. It was 6 feet off the ground, it’s now 11.

Bravo for you. Not sure how it relates to this thread, but apparently that means something to you. At a guess, you can now broadcast much further than before so you now have more range -but mind the skip now, right?

Speaking of which... shouldn’t that be “in” the air, not “off” the air? Underground? Hmmm, then why say it is “off the ground”?

Maybe Fox needs to run 15 minutes of commercials between the 5 minutes of news segments instead of their normal 10 minutes.

That’s one of the reasons I gave up on them.

Oh, I get that the networks/channels have a lot to do with it. But I'm pretty sure I can get the same package from Direct TV that I get from DISH for less, plus I can get a year for $49.99 a month. And this Fox thing is on the heels of the Turner thing, where DISH went without TCM (my favorite channel) for a month. The DISH CEO was quite cavalier about it, calling the loss of the Turner channels ''a non event''. I've had DISH for at least 15 years and have been solicited by DTV for years. I always told them I was happy with DISH. I now think it is time to jump ship.

You think THAT's bad, try over ten years ago when I gave up on Open Broadcast Commercial Radio (AM). Even the talk shows had about three minutes of talk interspersed with five minutes of commercial ad-ver -tise-ments.

Finally gave up on them as a mostly worthless waste of time.

It’s not all Dish’s fault. See previous. Do you really want to pay three times what you are paying now for FNC? (more added for broadcast fees and royalties, besides the basic rate).

If Dish is really all that bad, then all the good talent will gravitate out of there for better places to work, and the resultant sludge-of-the-pond will drag the company to oblivion in a very short time. However, you can not place all the blame in this instance entirely in the hands of FNC.

And then what if Direct pulls the same thing after a bunch of people switch over to them and are hooked into a 2 year contract?

That is exactly what I am worried about. That most people will come to rely upon a single carrier, and then when it becomes beyond competition they will raise their rates incredibly.

Dish is not the greatest company ever, it seems, but I think that the margins upon which it exists compared to another company or indeed other companies (and by the way, we DO need more competition out there) are slim at best and need to be balanced upon what the various media networks are asking for compared to what they bring in.

I do not believe Dish. In fact I recall the Fox crowd only a few weeks back wearing Dish hats etc. Dish played a bad joke right before Christmas on us. I will not tolerate a cable/TV provider waiting until the last minute to renew an agreement.

I called to cancel on Sunday, even though I was somewhat bluffing. I got $60 off my current bill and $60 off next month’s bill to stay. Although if the outage lasts more than a week or so, I probably will cancel anyway. If not, I saved $120.

LOL.

My son is in earshot of the local call center and has told me I need to call as they are making concessions (which you have confirmed). I tried last night, but did not get through.
