Welcome To The Recovery: US Box Office Spend Plunges To Lowest Since 2000

While the cancellation of 'The Interview' wiped billions off the US Box Office take in 2014 (), ticket sales in North America will total roughly $10.5 billion, according to The NY Times, the lowest since 2000 (after inflation). Regal Cinemas and AMX Theatres have seen profits collapse and Carmike Cinemas has plunged to a loss as major movie delays (from Pixar and Universal), "pirating" of several movies (The Expendables 3 and Annie) before their release, and studios suffering one dud after another (Warner Bros.) the 4% YoY decline - for what is ultimately an affordable luxury - suggests the gas-price-savings are going anywhere but discretionary spending (just as we noted previously).

Not a pretty picture of recovery...

The Interview? Billions? In 2014!?

Sounds like the kind of accounting that keeps aspiring rappers from ever seeing their supposed millions.

The sooner all branches of the dinosaur media die, the better.

The only film I want to see is “The imitation game” and I am not sure I want to see that if the focus to much on the homo aspect of it.

The crap they put out from Hollywood, and what box office receipts there are makes one realize why we have Obama.

Theaters are one of the first to fall in a depressed economy, clothing stores and restaurants are next.

It was prior to 2000 that I last spent anything at the “box office”.

My brother has the contract to clean a number of theaters and he sees no change in the amount of garbage left behind

Perhaps movies are becoming an outdated form of entertainment.

The theaters now play standard TV commercials while we wait for the movie to start. Remind me why I paid for the movie only to also have to sit through their commercials too? No thanks.

Actually, the entire movie experience sucks. Theaters aren't "grand" anymore. Sitting in a grubby little room, shoes sticking to the floor, rude asshats who can't put their phones away... who wants to shell out the big bucks for that? Hell, it's not even worth matinee pricing.

And don't get me started on the popcorn and soda prices.

And, yes, the movies themselves suck.

Ha Ha. While the rest of society is fixated on unemployment and the dastardly amount corporations make, the Hollywood whores are exempt from this rule. Every week we are told how much the box offices make; more is good, less is bad. But why? If the oil companies make a profit they are entitled to—that is bad. When Hollywood makes a profit for a great movie, one that no one was coerced or forced to see, that is good, but the profit from the rest of society is evil. Hypocrisy, manipulation, pure and simple.
