Off duty, black cops in New York feel threat from fellow police
Reuters ^ | December 23, 2014 | BY MICHELLE CONLIN

From the dingy donut shops of Manhattan to the cloistered police watering holes in Brooklyn, a number of black NYPD officers say they have experienced the same racial profiling that cost Eric Garner his life.

Reuters interviewed 25 African American male officers on the NYPD, 15 of whom are retired and 10 of whom are still serving. All but one said that, when off duty and out of uniform, they had been victims of racial profiling, which refers to using race or ethnicity as grounds for suspecting someone of having committed a crime.

The officers said this included being pulled over for no reason, having their heads slammed against their cars, getting guns brandished in their faces, being thrown into prison vans and experiencing stop and frisks while shopping. The majority of the officers said they had been pulled over multiple times while driving. Five had had guns pulled on them.

The black officers interviewed said they had been racially profiled by white officers exclusively, and about one third said they made some form of complaint to a supervisor.

Black cops engage in racial profiling same as white cops do.

They get a pass on it due to their skin color.

They get profiled by other BLACK cops too. It’s only logical.

Probably true. Due to racial quotas, they’re hiring the dregs of the black community, which means a lot of black cops are borderline thugs (and some are actual gang members). Blacks who are qualified to be cops are in higher paying jobs. This is how a guy like Obama came to occupy the White House.

I am one who is trying to give every comment an equal appraisal in order to test myself and to question my own preconceived notions. If there are injustices, if there is harassment or illegal physical brutality based solely on skin color, I am ready to join the voices of protest.

The idea that a black person would just be stopped walking or driving down the street and threatened or physically attacked would have me just as upset as I was when a California patrolman was stopping women on back roads and raping them. I see very little difference and don't mind saying so.

But this story has some holes in it that make me discount it.

1. I am naturally suspicious of media bias, especially from Reuters and A/P.

2. I have to think that the lack of concern for human life exhibited by urban crime stats in black communities and the influence of hip hop culture weighs heavily on officers during stops and investigations.

3. With all the crimes and emergency calls and given the ratio of people to cops; how do white cops have time for all this harassment?

4. Lastly, if things are this bad it seems to me that some black officers would finally fall victim to their own frustration and take it out on white citizens or off duty cops. Why are there no stories of those sort of incidents?

Why wouldn’t black cops feel that way they are raised to believe that The Evil Stupid Honky is hates their black guts and is just looking for a context to screw them royally out of their lives or their Rights?

Just out of curiosity I wonder how the same cops feel when they come across some of the ‘bruthas’ in a dark alley on or off duty? Anything like Jessie Jackson?

Really?

Uhm, put your accusations in the public square.

Identify yourself, the officers who wronged you, the date and circumstances.

Otherwise, your lie hole is just so much pablum and not credible.

Heads slammed??? Really!!! The first thing an off duty cop does when stopped by an officer is announce he’s on the job and ask permission to reach for his shield and ID . I doubt this Reuters fiction writer even asked his sources for proof of their standing. He or she can even give the color of the day which all NYPD officers are aware of. Color this report Bravo Sierra. Not to say black cops are not stopped when off duty and I understand the offense taken, but to claim physical abuse is ridiculous.

We can totally disregard all the known facts of the Eric Garner incident if they don’t fit our narrative.

Blacks made up 73 percent of the shooting perpetrators in New York in 2011 and were 23 percent of the population.

Profiling IS police work.

"It makes good headlines to say this is occurring, but I don’t think you can validate it until you look into the circumstances they were stopped in," said Bernard Parks, the former chief of the Los Angeles Police Department, who is African American.

Well, at least they printed this one.

“Can they say it is unreasonable to racially profile, given the crime statistics?”

Better still, ask all the white officers how many of them have been stopped when out of uniform. My experience with our local cops is that they routinely fail to observe basic traffic laws while in duty, so it follows that they probably act the same when off-duty. Let’s just see if there is a racial component to this allegation.

Blacks get profiled because Holder’s Justice Dept. statistics show that they commit homicide (murder) at a rate of more than seven times the rate of whites.

Similarly they commit assault, rape, robbery at higher rates.

Therefore marshaling scarce law enforcement resources to the most productive results, means targeting those most likely to be criminals.

For the peaceful and law abiding blacks, this is an unfortunate side effect of blacks’ social and cultural situation. If more blacks blamed the criminals, and not the police, perhaps they could help themselves.

One very tragic result of the first black President is not addressing the shortcomings of black society and culture.

Unfortunately their crimes are not limited to their own neighborhoods, for they terrorize whites and others.

Consequently, on my behalf, the good police are doing what they can to keep me safe. I do my own part as well, not going anywhere near blacks’ neighborhoods, whenever I can.
