A couple is still shaken up after they were robbed at gunpoint in a Lenexa neighborhood when trying to check out a car they found on Craigslist.

The Petersons went to the Lenexa home on Hauser Street and knocked on the door, but nobody answered. They said it looked as though nobody lived in the house. Then, a little black car pulled up and three people robbed them.

My wife and I live on a farm and buy and sell stuff on CL regularly, usually farm implements or equipment or supplies. It's not any more risky than selling through the classifieds, a sign in the yard or a garage sale. Life is risky. You just have to take precautions. We've had a couple of times where people tried to scam us on CL but it was over the phone or email and they were easy to spot. People who show up to buy something from you are just regular folks for the most part who need what you have to sell. Of course, having the squirrel gun handy helps if someone looks and acts suspect.

As soon as this lady showed up 30 minutes late at the QT and said to go to her house where her husband was, that would have been a big red flag to me to bail out and look for a car somewhere else. The husband could have driven the car to the QT. That was a classic set-up and trouble waiting to happen. Based on the facts presented in the article, these people sounded a little naive and not street smart to me.

Interesting. I still miss Leno’s headlines segment because he would post some funny personal ads people found in papers.

I imagine that is why when I am in some areas they have bulletproof glass in the fast food joints between you and the cashier. They got robbed and shot at in there.

Always meet the people at a public location................

We live down the street from the local cop shop. My son always tells prospects to meet him there. Once or twice, the folks had a sudden change of plans.

LENEXA? THIS HAPPENED IN LENEXA?

You can’t get any more “safe suburbia” than that!
(I used to live there)

Eek.

Craigslist never went bad for me.

I had a good transaction with an individual that I planned on working with again. He changed his phone number and when I looked at my archived emails with him, I found Craigslist ‘thinks’ they are protecting me, but in reality C/L left me with no contact email after the posting was pulled down. No way for me to work past this disconnect now.

What is a ‘local cop shop’? Do you mean a donut business ?

Anyone engaging in business through Craig’s List would be wise to bring along a few armed friends as a “security deal.”

Rule for cash purchases from CL of any significant sum of money:

1. Carry concealed if your state allows it; in vehicle if not on person which VA allows without a permit.

2. Only agree to meet in well-populated location, well lit and safe part of town if at night. High traffic bank is great....or other place with security guards. Let guards know what’s going on in advance.

NEVER carry cash into area you are not familiar with and known as safe.

You know lots of banks do not have security guards any longer. They have zillions upon zillions of cameras from every angle, but no guards.

I have sold two cars on Craigslist. My local credit union agreed to let us do the eval and sale in lobby and helped us fill out the transfer paperwork. With all the cameras and people in the bank aware of the sale, it has been a good and safe place for large transactions.

I tried selling some appraised high end jewelry for a relative on CL a couple years back.

In the ad, I put specifically meet at a bank during regular hours among other sensible precautions.

One response was a poorly spelled question if they could come to my home in the evening. No response to that one.

Another one I got was more interesting. It sounded like a serviceman (young) but suspicious all the same. The english was just a little off to me. Anyway I responded with the usual canned response and asked about setting up a time to meet.

The responses I got back were very broken english with the guy(s) saying he was in the Marines in California and his chief wouldn’t let him go and it got stranger from there.

Of course I got a nigerian one with the offer of overpaying for my trouble and mailing them off.

The jewelry is still under lock and key somewhere at that person’s home.
