Government tells Americans to stop eating cookie dough

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has issued an order that millions of Americans will likely find impossible to carry out: stop eating raw cookie dough.

“Avoid raw or partially cooked eggs or foods containing raw eggs, such as cookie dough,” USDA advised in an email over the weekend. cookie1

Carrying out that simple 15-word recommendation would radically change millions of lives, from families who routinely bake cookies and invite the kids to scoop batter out of the bowl, to people who scarf down pre-packaged cookie dough, to everyone who eats cookie dough found in ice cream.

Simply put, it’s not immediately clear that America is ready to take on USDA’s mission. But it’s also unclear if it’s necessary — there is something of a debate over whether it’s safe to eat cookie dough, or whether the risk of getting salmonella from raw eggs is too high.

Some, like FoodBeast.com, say it’s “actually really hard to get salmonella from eggs.” The site has an article up noting that bakers routinely eat batter and never get sick, and say the trick is in making sure the eggs are refrigerated.

And cookie dough found in ice cream is pasteurized, making it safe to eat, according to various online food experts.

But many still note the danger, and the 2009 recall of raw dough from Nestle that got dozens of people sick from E. coli. A Las Vegas mother died in 2013 of E. coli after eating raw cookie dough.

EatRight.Org, a group of food and nutritional professionals, sides with USDA, and says people must “resist the cookie dough temptation.”

“Sampling the batter while baking holiday treats may seem like as much of a tradition as singing carols or decorating the house, but eating batter or cookie dough that contains raw eggs can lead to salmonella poisoning,” the group warns.

“It’s especially important to teach children to not eat cookie dough containing raw eggs, as young children are more vulnerable to food poisoning,” it said. “Before you begin cooking with children, discuss the Cookie Rookie Pledge together to help them understand what they can do to stay healthy and happy, and enjoy their cookies too!”

The pledge says kids should wait until cookies are “fully baked” before eaten. “Steer clear of licking spoons, bowls and beaters!” it said.

Mrs. abb’s been telling me the same thing for 35 years.

She probably also tells you, "abb, if you pee outside, you'll get a sty in your eye", or, "if you keep looking at those girlie magazines, you'll get hairy palms and go blind". hehehe.

Remember when NJ came out with a law saying diners were not allowed to serve sunny side up eggs? That didn’t last very long.

Words fail me, which is good, otherwise I’d love to invite the nanny-staters to: 1. Have intimate sexual relations with themselves and then: 2. Off themselves to get ‘em out of our lives forever.

Mine too. I never saw any worms either. But then I am an obedient daughter and never ate the cookie dough.

We are constantly warned about stuff like this, but they don’t seem to be that worried about some other things that may be a lot more serious. Our administration doesn’t seem to want to deal with the real hard issues of the day,so I guess they think warnings like this will divert our attention. I’d guess it ain’t working.

My grandmother used to tell me not to eat raw cookie dough.

I don’t need the government ragging on me either.

I tell them both to be quiet. They are not my mother.

There’s nothing more delicious than that slice-and-bake cookie dough, raw. Can’t they do whatever they do to the cookie dough in ice cream, so we can eat it?

salmonella is a horrifying infection i wouldn't wish on my worst enemy.

there's always a chance but local freerange eggs are the lowest risk. it is more common in a factory farm with chickens indoors in close quarters

This is Truly amazing...

Yours truly, Chef C210n just finished making a BIG chocolate mousse, now the chocolate gold is cooling in the fridge for serving tonight. Grabbed the almost-but-not-quite-empty 12-quart bowl I mixed everything in, chocolate mixture with 5 egg yolks, egg white mixture - 8 eggs, and just plucked out of FR the first article that looked interesting... and it happened to be this one!

I think it was more "not quite" than it was "almost" empty... but it's empty now!

OK, confession time. I do eat raw cookie dough. I made about 100 cookies this season. The batter for the sunken kisses cookies not so great since I’m not too fond of peanut butter. The oatmeal cranberry cookie dough is the best followed closely by the chocolate chip cookie dough. However, DO NOT refrigerate the eggs right up until you make the cookies. And this is important. All ingredients must be room temp but especially the butter and eggs. Also, eggs will keep without refrigeration up to a week but I guess the risk of salmonella increases but I do know this - if the egg turns and you crack it open, you will know. In fact, you will want to leave the room immediately. But I have camped in the tropics without refrigeration and used eggs that are several days away from the chicken. Still good and did not get sick. Turkey and any other poultry however, be very careful. Wash your hands and countertops and utensils between every step.

I guess they would have a coronary eclipse if they knew I eat my eggs sunny side up.

Slice it, then freeze it before eating. Then it's even more delicious.
