Sorry, but Rush is wrong on this one. James Bond is a fictional character. Your examples of white people playing non-fictional black characters is inappropriate and frankly ludicrous.

There is no artistic or cinematic reason James Bond couldn’t be black. To suggest otherwise opens the door to being accused of racism, and rightfully so.

“There is no artistic or cinematic reason James Bond couldn’t be black.”

And the next “Shaft” should be white.

How about a white Shaft (as mentioned in a previous post) or Othello?

That's a good point, but there's a bigger question here that a lot of the leftists complaining about this sort of thing probably don't want to be answered:

Why do movie producer consider playing black actors in roles that had previously been played by white actors, but not vice versa?

The answer is that a lot of movies are aimed at minority viewing audiences. And the reasons a lot of these leftists don't want this question answered is that these movies have become increasingly violent, silly and dumbed down as they are marketed to these audiences.

Did you not read the part about Ian Flemings character being a Scot? The fictional character Shaft being a black man if played by Neil Patrick Harris is just as ludicrous. Why you cannot see that logic escapes me.

OK then, what say you to a black Huckleberry Finn?

Or a white Fat Albert?

Okay, let’s write a movie that takes place in the 1840s. A group of African slaves played by Neil Patrick Harris, Liv Tyler, Kevin Sorbo, and Kelsey Grammer all toil away under the watchful eyes of their cruel master, Jamie Fox as the fictional Cyrus McCormick, Alabaman cotton Farmer known locally as the Crazed Scot for his horrible temper.

When one day, Pierre, a local tailor played by Jackie Chan, let’s them know he’s a member of the Underground Railroad.

They can have a black James Bond but they have to ditch character continuity.

Right you are. This sort of thing really makes Rush look, at a minimum, small. Black James Bond, female James Bond (Jamie Bond, perhaps?), who cares.

As long as the movie explains how a Scotsman got to be black. ;-)

“There is no artistic or cinematic reason James Bond couldn’t be black.”

There is no reason a British spy could not be played by a black. The problem with Bond being played by a black is that...well, the character is white. If you want to re-imagine how it might have been, why bother calling him “Bond”?

Of course, I think the Bond flicks should be kept in the Cold War era. They made more sense then. If one wants to keep up with the changing of Britain, then we need to re-imagine Bond as a woman hating Muslim:

“Bond, Mohammed Bond. Goat’s milk. Shaken, not stirred.”

The Waziri could all be white.

No, Rush is right on the money!

This is a deliberate cultural attack, so quit whitewashing it.

The James Bond series is a display of a specific cultural image.

But “Barack Obama” is a fictional character, currently played by Barry Dunham-Soetero. The “Barack Obama” character was created in the minds of Dunham-Soetero and the American Progressive movement.

It matters not what conservatives do, or say they will always be branded racists, but it is the racist RATS who voted against all the civil rights Bills.

James Bond is an iconic figure, much beloved by the British. Having a black man play the fictional part is an insult to them.

I can see where some people might want to tear down the traditions.

OK, so you would be fine with casting Brad Pitt as Charlie Chan.

I’d agree. Idris Elba played “Stringer” Bell on the HBO series “The Wire”. He portrayed a character who was “cool”, smooth, and in control with an underlying hint of violence. That’s pretty much the way I see a Bond character.
