Another weekend, another big fight at a mall with large groups of people. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out who is responsible.

What’s with groups of negro youth being involved in brawls at shopping malls?

How long before some of these malls go under? If they get a reputation of being ghetto and attracting mobs of black youth who are up to no good, will actual paying customers still go shopping there?

Anyone here familiar with the Washington DC area may remember Landover Mall. That mall came to have a ghetto reputation. Stores closed down one by one, and evevtually the mall was torn down.

Lafayette Square on the west side of Indy has been a dumpster bin for years because of roving gangs. I doubt that the Simons are going to let the same fate fall upon Castleton Square.

Landover Mall had theaters there in which vandalism was an ongoing problem. The stuffing was gouged right out of many of the theater seats. Entire rows of seats rocked back and forth because the bolts attaching the seats to the floor had been sheared off. We eventually stopped going there. The environment was too forbidding. It made us wonder what type of theater goers rip up the seats like that.

Valley View theaters on Thursday and this today. The movie industry will start to take notice when even fewer people go to movie theaters.

I wonder if the Mall of America in Bloomington, MN
will meet that fate in a couple of years. A couple of shootings of customers and Mall sales will go into free fall.

theaters attached to malls are terrible places to be. blacks cause almost all the trouble at these places. we’ve got an amc off a mall nearby and that’s a ongoing source of problems. never any whites or asians the cause for the trouble. doesn’t help we have several buslines with dropoffs from the inner city.

How long before some of these malls go under?

The posters on another thread this morning were talking about just that. Lots of them go out of business and become hair extension and chicken outlets. The ferals then take public transit to the next mall to destroy it. Wash, rinse, repeat.

Randall Square Mall outside of Cleveland, OH, shut down after several such incidents a few years ago. They finally got around to tearing down the buildings. This week. When it opened in the 70s, it was the largest mall in the country, built on the site of a former horse track. Now it’s vacant land - or will be when they clear the debris. A couple of malls south of Atlanta have shut down, and there’s the former Red Bird mall in Dallas (still at the thrift store stage, I think). Metrocenter in Jackson MS was in trouble for the ‘urban youth’ problem last I heard several years ago.

Posting this made me realize I need to check in on the DeadMalls site. Haven’t been there in a while. http://deadmalls.com/

A couple of shootings of customers and Mall sales will go into free fall.

Read the history of the Dixie Square Mall in Harvey, IL. It's the mall made famous in the movie The Blues Brothers.

From the Wikipedia article:

However, by the early 1970s, crime was becoming an increasing problem in the mall's town of Harvey, a failing, poverty-stricken suburb 20 miles south of Chicago, and several major incidents occurred at or near the mall. In November 1972, a young woman was fatally shot near the mall in a botched robbery attempt. On April 20, 1973, another person was shot in a robbery on the mall property itself. On July 17, 1973, a teenage girl was lured away from the mall by three other teenage girls, and strangled to death. From 1973 to 1976, Dixie lost many stores, including the Montgomery Ward anchor, which closed on October 4, 1976 and Turn Style which closed in January 1978 (the entire chain would close). In a last-ditch effort to bring back shoppers and tenants, the mall underwent a renovation in 1976 and shortened its name to simply Dixie Mall. These efforts failed, as by 1978, it was down to its final twenty stores, with JCPenney departing in January.
