Ted Cruz's Plan For NASA Is Epic
Business Insider ^ | January 14, 2015 | Hunter Walker and Jessica Orwig

Now that the Republicans have taken over Congress, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) will be chairman of the Senate Commerce Subcommittee on Science, Space, and Competitiveness, which oversees the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

Cruz issued a press release on Wednesday outlining his plans for the space agency. In his statement, which was titled "Focus NASA on Its Core Mission: Exploring Space, and More of It," Cruz said he wants to expand the US space program.

"In 1962, President John F. Kennedy laid down a marker for space exploration that inspired a generation of Americans to reach for the stars, recognizing that the race to the heavens was nothing less than a crucial front in the battle between freedom and tyranny," Cruz said.

Cruz, who is widely seen as a potential 2016 presidential candidate, went on to argue that NASA's partnership with Russia on the International Space Station has endangered American space exploration and innovation.

"More than 50 years later, we have lost sight of that clarion call," Cruz's statement said. "Russia’s status as the current gatekeeper of the International Space Station could threaten our capability to explore and learn, stunting our capacity to reach new heights and share innovations with free people everywhere. The United States should work alongside our international partners, but not be dependent on them. We should once again lead the way for the world in space exploration."(continued)

JFK as an inspiration? NASA needs to be wound down. The future of space is private. Cruz has gone native.

Planetary exploration is still a government endeavor.

The likes of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory is not a business model. It is basic research.

That said, routine functions like low earth orbit should be done by private contractors.

“- We are never going to tavel to or settle on Mars or build a permanent base on the moon -”

NASA has just been a little misdirected in its Muslim outreach and was tapping the wrong culture. Now, reach out to all those illegals doing the jobs US citizens (and Muslims) won’t do, and we could have a base on Pluto, for half the cost, before the end of the decade. s/

Agreed, space exploration should be like Lewis and Clark, the government sends the explorers and then behind that ever expanding sphere is a sphere of private space industry.

The problem with the NASA has been run has been the cronies want to stay in low earth orbit as that is the one area they can keep milking the government cash cow most efficiently...

Space exploration is a national security issue as there are some very good resources out in space that need protecting and can later be exploited, from communications and GPS now, to asteroid mining and orbital solar power generation later.

Spending money on NASA is a far better use than paying welfare bums, both in the hood and in the boardrooms...

[ Further evidence that if the Senate leadership wants to marginalize a member who wants to reduce government then the quickest way to do it is give him chairmanship of a committee that spends money. ]

It was all part of Turtle’s plan to get Ted Cruz the moniker “Guy who hates science” in the national discussion....

Ted has creatively side stepped this indirect attack, and we shall see his plans.

Jefferson should have been impeached for his unconstitutional Lewis and Clark expedition.....

The L&C expedition was military, although the Louisiana Purchase itself was thought by some to be unconstitutional.

Congress’s state-delegated constitutional power to grant patents (1.8.8), if that is what you are possibly referring to, is a separate issue from taxing and spending for space exploration.

Also, note that I’m not saying that the feds shouldn’t explore space. But let’s establish federal space exploration programs within the framework of the Constitution.

I would be fine with Rolling NASA under the military jurisdiction.

As everyone knows, there wouldn’t even BE a space program were it not for the copious scientific breakthroughs of Mooseslums.

Reverting to the Apollo program and cutting a few corners doesn’t count as “the future”. That’s taking a few steps backwards in terms of design and experience (from the existing field of participants in aerospace). Developing from the Shuttle would at least provide a modern starting point.

I see this as a plus for conservatism/Republicans. When the administration skipped Houston when determining where the retired space shuttles should be permanently housed, Dems lost a lot of support in these parts (Houston/Clear Lake area + surrounding communities). I worked at NASA for about 20 years in total and still know a lot of people in the area, both retired and employed. It would be hard to describe the anger and sense of betrayal this part of Texas felt when it was decided that "Space City" didn't merit a retired space shuttle. After suffering the sting of the back of Obama's hand when he chose to skip over Houston, we then suffered the back of Schmucky Schumer's hand when he gloated in the most unstatesman-like manner imaginable about Houston's being overlooked. This did NOT sit well with voters of any stripe in this region.

Why don’t you come out and honestly tell us who your candidate is?

In spite of some concerns I still think that Cruz is the best of the bunch and I plan on voting for him.

So...what do have to say about this:

I say, "How do you plan to fund the increased spending?"
