Ted Cruz's Plan For NASA Is Epic
Business Insider ^ | January 14, 2015 | Hunter Walker and Jessica Orwig

Now that the Republicans have taken over Congress, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) will be chairman of the Senate Commerce Subcommittee on Science, Space, and Competitiveness, which oversees the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

Cruz issued a press release on Wednesday outlining his plans for the space agency. In his statement, which was titled "Focus NASA on Its Core Mission: Exploring Space, and More of It," Cruz said he wants to expand the US space program.

"In 1962, President John F. Kennedy laid down a marker for space exploration that inspired a generation of Americans to reach for the stars, recognizing that the race to the heavens was nothing less than a crucial front in the battle between freedom and tyranny," Cruz said.

Cruz, who is widely seen as a potential 2016 presidential candidate, went on to argue that NASA's partnership with Russia on the International Space Station has endangered American space exploration and innovation.

"More than 50 years later, we have lost sight of that clarion call," Cruz's statement said. "Russia’s status as the current gatekeeper of the International Space Station could threaten our capability to explore and learn, stunting our capacity to reach new heights and share innovations with free people everywhere. The United States should work alongside our international partners, but not be dependent on them. We should once again lead the way for the world in space exploration."(continued)

So who do you think is the best leader to lead us?

Research at the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) emphasizes a broad study of global change, which is an interdisciplinary initiative addressing natural and man-made changes in our environment that occur on various time scales — from one-time forcings such as volcanic explosions, to seasonal and annual effects such as El Niño, and on up to the millennia of ice ages — and that affect the habitability of our planet.

These idiots cannot even read & understand the name of their own institute! "Space " does not equal "our environment"!

At least he’s trying to return NASA to its core core mission: space exploration and not Muslim outreach. And having to rely on Russia for rides to space is down right embarrassing.

And why do we need to be spending the funds on it? I would like him to use his committee role to promote private industry solutions and reduce NASA's role.

NASA shouldn’t be involved in “Muslim outreach.”

And aren’t there other institutions that can record the history of the Earth’s climate? NASA should be solely focused on the technologies to keep us in space, as well as working on the tech to help us colonize.

Right, we couldn’t get into space without government. If only we had a space program that worked...

Why is planetary exploration a government endeavor? Where are we going? What’s the benefit? Privatize it and pay down the debt and you’ll reach the stars faster.

Elon Musk has done more for space travel in the last few years, than NASAs done in thirty. It’s government, get it?

NASA has been doing it longer than anyone in the US. I know they no longer have the lead in it, but they’ll have a place as far as leadership goes for a long time to come. After all, they put men on the moon.

Hey, our part of the space station is broken and we had to move in with the Russians.

I never heard about that. What module is it?

I am amazed at the number of people on this thread who don’t realize that the United States needs to *control* space (at least our immediate portion of it) as a defense issue. Cruz can’t come out and SAY that (because enough people already like to call him a loon) but it’s true. The Chinese are working to put a base on the Moon. And the U.S. can’t be out in space without Russia’s cooperation these days. Do you think letting Russia and China control our immediate area of space is a safe way to go for the long run?

Remember the dictum: Control the high ground. And it’s a little dated, but find and read “The Moon is a Harsh Mistress.” Then let’s talk.

There’s a reason you have to pass map reading before you take any other classes in military intelligence. Fail that and you’re on your way to cooking school.
