Detectives Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos were killed on patrol on Dec 20

Entrepreneur contacted a Chinese newspaper with plan to donate $1m

The money was wired to New York's Detectives Endowment Association

Donor requested that Liu's father receive $100,000 a year for 5 years, and Ramos' sons have $500,000 put into their educational fund

Both families wept as they gathered to receive the gift in Manhattan

An anonymous donor from Hong Kong has given $1 million to the families of the two NYPD officers shot dead last month.

Detectives Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos were murdered on patrol in Brooklyn on December 20, 2014, by a crazed gunman who then committed suicide.

On Friday, their grieving families united to receive the gift.

Liu's father Wei Tang Liu will receive $100,000 a year for five years. Ramos' two sons will have $500,000 put into their educational fund.

Very true, it is sad to see. I know many here were not fans of his Presidential run, but when Rudy Giuliani was Mayor of NYC, he brought crime down to miniscule levels. Even I, a disabled nan, felt totally safe any time I visited Manhattan. I never once had a nervous moment that I was in any danger. Now, with DiBlasio- no way. I won’t even visit there until he is out of office. He supports the no-good people, he supports the criminals.

Sounds like something Jackie Chan would do.

But not like a DE Blazio, Fienstien, Pelosi, Kennedy, Kerry, or . . . . the list goes on and on.

The Detectives Endowment Association probably has a 501(c)(3) set up to raise and disperse funding. I am part of an education foundation that issues scholarships to employees or the children of employees. As far as I know the funds are provided tax-free. Depending upon how funds are disseminated through the association, the higher US tax rates can probably be avoided especially if Officer Liu’s father isn’t working.

What’s the tax rate on foreign gifts? I’m pretty sure the Feds can take 48%, I am not sure on NYC or the State.

For the recipient? Nothing. They do have to report it to the IRS, but there is no tax on it for the recipient.

Well done, sir. You may have chosen anonymity, but what you have done reflects well on Hong Kong. Thank you for reminding us what charity is.

Thank you for your work. A few years ago an off duty Sheriff’s Deputy was ambushed by a couple of miscreants in Oklahoma City. There was an outpouring of support for his wife and children. I collaborated with the Sheriff to “protect and preserve” the donations for the family, not the hospitals. I created the 501(c)(3) to accept, and disburse such monies. Despite the urging of the Sheriff, I declined to serve on the Board - I felt, and still feel - that it should be administered by law enforcement officers. I still advise them pro bono. It can be done in any state/community.

Again, thank you for what you do.

Don’t shortchange yourself. The sheriff’s department possibly needed objective eyes on the program.

It is an honor to do what I can to give back. It is especially rewarding when the foundation receives letters from recipients. Just last year, one of the employees passed away. Since his son and daughter were still in college, the foundation decided to provide scholarships of $5,000 per semester until each completed the bachelor program. Since he had not made plans for a funeral and burial, we assisted his widow in selecting a funeral home and burial plot. She sent each member of the foundation a gracious note.

Aren’t we business people terrible? Many of us are errant Christians and Jews but I think we still do a better job at caring than the government.
