I’m so far out in the boondocks that uploading is sketchy at best. I guess the server is there, I just keep loosing the connection. I may be golden, but I’m flyin’ blind (All I see are broken links and dreaded X’s).

My parents did the jitterbug to Benny Goodman’s band when they played the USO in Dallas in 1943 before my Dad shipped out to help deal with the Japanese.

“Sing, sing, sing is still quite a song for that greatest generation. I like it too. I belive Gene Krupa was there too, no less

I wasn’t around then, way before me, but I can see them dancing in my mind.

My mom could still cut a rug to that music into her early 80’s.

My wife was amazed at seeing her do just that in our kitchen when she said she could still do it and showed us. So was I.

I’ll be here for a little while, but I don’t have anything planned, so I’ll improvise a bit.

This song is somewhat bi-tonal. I know, I know! Musical conservatives want it to be either straight major or straight minor, but bi-tonality is legal in enough states to be socially acceptable today.

The verses are in D minor, and the chorus is in F Major, each key sharing one flat. But the bass line, which is in D minor, never changes. During the chorus you have a vocal and instrumental line in F Major and a bass line in D minor. This is a kind of bi-tonality.

I do not know if you will like or dislike this. You'll know what I mean when you see the content. I have mixed feelings, too, but I like the version:

Sing, Sing Sing

There are “guitar keys” which have sharps and “piano keys” which have flats. When you get up into the high numbers of sharps and flats, you get a kind of crossover. Six sharps is F# Major, and six flats is G-flat Major, which are the same key. So this song could be in either six sharps or six flats.

With modern electronics, you can write and play the song in a simpler key like F Major (one flat) or G Major (one sharp) and have it come out in a different key. That may be what happened here. That octave leap at the end just sells it.

My personal favorite from 1938. It was 77 years ago today this was played at Carnegie Hall. Said Gene Krupa before they went onstage: "I feel like a whore in church." The piano solo at 9:30 is one of the most haunting things I've ever heard. I still get cold chills listening to it.

Couldnt get it to download on the phone. But, I saw “Swing girls of Japan” on the address line. Will try on the computer.

Brings to mind another WWII classic, “I’m a cranky old Yank, in a clanky old tank, on the streets of Yokohama, etc.”

Or, “Pardon me Roy, is that the cat that ate your new shoes?”
Innocent humor back in those days.
