About 3.1 million wage and salary earners in Germany had an income below the poverty threshold, according to Saturday’s edition of the Saarbrücker Zeitung newspaper.

The paper cited an overview from Germany’s Federal Statistical Office showing the most recent available data, which covered the year 2013. It also showed the numbers of workers struggling to make ends meet jumped from about 2.5 million in 2008—an increase of 25 percent in five years.

Data based on household surveys showed that those living on low wages were cutting back on food and heating, among other things, to save money. According to a special analysis by the statisticians, in 2013 some 538,000 low-wage workers were eating a full meal only every second day in an effort to save money on food. About 417,000 were going without adequate heating, and almost 380,000 people could not afford to pay their rent on time. …

No kidding, I can’t find one grocery shopper who uses EBT cards (food stamps) who is not fat.

They made a number of small ‘modifications’ to the social welfare state in starting in 2003:

These reforms were not very popular with the leftists.

I don’t think the Gemütlichkeit of the German social model anticipated an influx of Turks who have no interest in becoming good Germans.

same here.

How the hell can they say we have to give them food when they are fat as hell

If Chewbacca was serious about her healthy crap then she should talk t her husband and see about changing food stamps, like if you have EBT then you can only get fruit and veggies and cereal, no shrimp{luxury item}, soda, cakes, chips etc

“How many of those are Turks?”

EXACTLY! Living in poverty in Germany sure beats living in poverty in Turkey

Thanks to nutball green policies like closing nuclear power plants and mandated renewable energies, they have the highest electric rates in the EU.

Perhaps the poor they care about so much would benefit from civilized costs for electricity and a little less worship of Gaia.

You make a good point. Also, there is an excellent case to be made that depending on how you measure standard of living, the Europeans don’t live all that well. There was an excellent economic study that I read and wish I could find again that stated most Europeans live lives that compare only with the residents of our poorest state. Keep in mind, the average German still does not own his own home and pays very high prices for food & fuel.

How many of those are Turks?

Indeed. The first thing I noticed was that they didn't say "Germans" but rather "wage and salary earners in Germany".

I suspected as much from the headline.

It’s good they are working!

Come to the US and join the other 92 million that aren’t working. We will pay you not to work.
