Falling Gas Tax Revenue Has California Lawmakers Considering Mileage Tax Plan
CBS SF Bay Area ^ | January 25, 2015 | Staff

With an increase in electric and hybrid vehicles along with better fuel-efficient vehicles, changing Bay Area drivers habit are posing a serious problem for state coffers. As motorists use less and less gas, gas tax revenues to pay for state highways, roads and bridges shrink. Meanwhile, as gas prices fall, so does the sales tax generated by fuel sales. In California, among the taxes collected on fuel is a 2.25% sales tax on gasoline and a 9.67 percent tax on diesel.

I wish these clowns would stop referring to thieves as “lawmakers”. They are thieving bastards who steal other people’s money.

We are taxed by mileage right more. If I buy 40 gallons of gas each week and you buy 10 gallons, I pay a greater amount of taxes than you do. I also use the roads more than you do. The mileage tax is a double taxation.

A government can only give away other people’s money until the well runs dry. A dollar a gallon tax is a good way to keep the redistribution going. No wonder people in huge numbers.
This amounts to about a $500.00 a year tax increase for drivers of 16000 miles annually in a 30 mpg car. Are California and Washington really worth the taxes and high cost of living, government over reach, etc?

The box plugs into the diagnostic port and it records your mileage.

They will probably demand that all vintage and classic cars without modern diagnostics be junked or retrofitted at great expense.

None of my vehicles has compliant OBD-11. Neither do the cars belonging to many illegals.

They won't because of esteemed illegals driving those vehicles.

If I know liberals, and I do, they’ll find some way to exempt the guilty and punish the innocent.

A fuel tax based on a percentage has 2 variables. Eliminate one and tax at a flat rate (”X” cents/unit).

What they call sales tax is included in the per gallon price at the pump, and not included in the mandated sticker, and something I constantly correct with a black marker.
