You Betcha I Was Wrong About Sarah Palin
Daily Beast ^ | 01/28/2015 | Matt Lewis

It’s time to admit that, whatever their motivation was at the time, the Alaska governor’s critics always had a point. Has conservative genuflection at the altar of Sarah Palin finally come to a halt?

In case you missed it, her speech in Iowa this week was not well received on the right. The Washington Examiner’s Byron York called it a “long, rambling, and at times barely coherent speech” and National Review’s Charles C.W. Cooke said she slipped into self-parody. And there’s more. The Examiner’s Eddie Scarry, for example, contacted several conservative bloggers who were once Palin fans, but have since moved on.

But here’s my question… what changed?

Yes, in 2008, Sarah Palin delivered one of the finest convention speeches I’ve ever heard (trust me, I was there), but she hasn’t exactly been channeling Winston Churchill ever since. Remember her big speech at CPAC a couple of years ago? You know, the one where she took a swig out of a Big Gulp and said of her husband Todd: “He’s got the rifle, I got the rack.” Not exactly a great moment in political rhetoric.

So why is anyone surprised when, this weekend, she said: “‘The Man,’ can only ride ya when your back is bent?”

Demosthenes, she is not, but there’s nothing new about Palin’s penchant for populism or lowbrow rhetoric. What does feel new is that she has finally gotten around to roundly losing conservative opinion leaders. (OK, this has been a long time coming. In 2011, Conor Friedersdorf noted that the hard right was skewering Palin, and that Kathleen Parker had been vindicated. And as recently as this past April, I wondered whether it was finally safe for conservatives to criticize her publicly.

This Daily Beast article is just another one of the string of anti-Palin articles appearing in the last few days. The EFFETE wing of the GOPe has long manifested Palin Derangement Syndrome (PDS) and it is clear that these writers are putting forth the designated GOPe talking points that recently went out.

The sad thing is that, judging from some of the posts in this thread, some from the ranks of the LOWER IQ AND/OR MORE GULLIBLE FReepers have partaken of the PDS kool-aid.

sad to say, i don’t think she is going to run for anything—and the way she was treated by the left and the right could be the cause. She may serve in other ways. I heard he most recent speach and it wasn’t her best. Still, she has a role to play—in the next cabinate. She needs to focus on her roots more. She can be a good spokeswoman for the conservative cause.

re: Elitists can’t stand anyone that isn’t another elitist. They look down on the hoi polloi as peasants to be exploited and used and thrown away at their pleasure.

That’s what happened when Sharon Angle ran against Harry Reid in Nevada. The elitists in the Republican ranks supported Harry Reid.

You can't fathom why Palin decided not to run? Take a long hard look at Romney's sleazy underhanded dishonest tactics, lying and slander, against every single GOP candidate who stayed in the race.

No, that’s not what I said. I said I couldn’t fathom why she decided to rent a big bus and tour the primary states with her family, if she wasn’t planning on running. Doesn’t make much sense.

That is a fabulous quote.

Yes, and it was funny how once the primary season ended and the target would be Obama the kid gloves went on Romney and his operatives and Obama was subjected to the gentlest possible treatment. It was stupid and it led invariably to Romney (the nice guy in the general election) being defeated and victory being handed to the undeserving Obama.

More people slllooowwwly realizing Palin is far more interested in building her brand (reality TV shows, books, paid speeches, etc) than actually running for office?

I guess she should have made B movies instead...

I think she was planning on running, but given Romney's hardball tactics, she decided against it, after renting the bus, etc. All of the candidates dropped out eventually, given Romney's relentless slanders. And Sarah had already had a dose of what Romney was capable of doing in 2008. I do not fault her for making the decision after all not to try to run; the cost for her family was probably just too great, because she felt that there was not much the Romney machine would not do to destroy her; that Romney with all of his money had decided the nomination was his. While I get really mad when the pundits try to compare this, Romney's evident 3rd attempt to run, with Ronald Reagan who won the election after being nominated the very first time, RR did make an effort to win the nomination twice before. So what is wrong with Sarah, still a young woman trying again? Other candidates have made some early attempts at running and then decided not to pursue the nomination, but since they did not rent a bus, is it the fact that she rented a bus and then dropped out is what you are upset about? Was it your bus, and you were counting on the rental income?

I have no idea what Palin was doing but I know it makes sense to observe, feel
and try to comprehend what the voting public is feeling. If she got the indication
it wasn’t her time then I can’t blame her for not running. JMO

Nope. But do you think it makes sense that she all the sudden decided to do this ditzy stunt just to jump up and down and look important? Just to make fools of people?

That doesn't make much sense, either.

Who knows what she was doing? Who knows why she decided not to run in 2012? For someone to whine and cry because they volunteered to get their hopes up that she would, and blame it for ills, kinda shows lack of accountability for one's own actions. Stop whining and buck up.

Maybe there was another reason, too. Palin endorsed Gov. Perry in his run for governorship, and he'd sworn up and down that he was going to remain in the governorship, by golly, follow through. He won, then crawfished and ran in the presidential primaries anyway.

I think that might have been part of it. Windy probably remembers it better than I do.

Exactly. It’s one thing to have the libs and their minions attack Palin. That’s somewhat expected. Although admittedly no one might have expected the incredibly vile lengths they would sink to.

Usually things wouldn’t get that far because there would be a vibrant allied pushback. But the GOP-E and much of the so-called conservative punditry didn’t bother. Because they are corrupt, elite scumbags, and were happy to see Palin deep-sixed. Many of them (like here) even joined in with the wilding, cowtowing to the elite media lefties, whom they are actually more culturally and ideologically alligned with. The libs are bad enough, but these backstabbing cretins... they are the lowest of the low. Sub-human filth. Frankly, I hold them in even deeper contempt than the lefty-libs in the media.

Who is whining and crying? I simply stated my opinion. Apparently some people are offended if you don’t share their opinions, but I could care less.
