Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov said on Thursday Russia would consider extending financial aid to debt-strapped Greece if Athens were to make a request.
“Well, we can imagine any situation, so if such petition is submitted to the Russian government, we will definitely consider it, but will take into account all the factors of our bilateral relationships between Russia and Greece,” he told CNBC.
Speculation has grown in recent days that new Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras’ government is at odds with the rest of Europe over sanctions on Russia, and may move closer to Moscow as it seeks to renegotiate its bailout program with Europe. …

Yes. Notice the new government has said not one word about all the Greeks killed by the communists after WWII.
Syriza qualifies as communist. “Synaspismós Rizospastikís Aristerás” means “Coalition of the Radical Left”.

Actually, Greece might be a logical ally to Russia. They have an Orthodox tradition and like government to provide a lot of benefits. Neither one wants to give up their civilization to Muslim and other invasion. Greece has lovely warm-weather ports. Russia has resources. Two economically shunned countries might do well bartering for their needs.
If they can provide safety and preserve history and culture, they could become ideal tourist destinations.
If Russia is to become Greece’s benefactor, it will be with strings attached. That should be grounds for booting Greece from NATO. And while we are at it, let’s turf Turkey as well.

Well, if they do, you can bet it won’t be in “dollars”.

Not like the EU’s “bailout” loans came with no strings attached. Mainly the permanent surrender of fiscal sovereignty to the central government in Brussels.
It’s really about imperialism more than money. The old empires have reared their ugly heads once more in that part of the world.

Maybe not, but it’s a matter of PRIORITIES. Even with the economic mess in Russia, their military buildup is continuing, NON-STOP (50 new ICBMs this year, for starters). If they want to help Grease, they will find the money.
People may suffer there, somewhat, but if they dish out money to deadbeats anything close to what we do, then there is a LOT OF ROOM to cut back on spending without hurting anyone...more likely helping people, by getting them off their butts.
Furthermore, this would not be the only Communist/far leftist party that Russia eagerly supports. The Russkies also support fascists and neo-Nazi parties in Europe as well. But, the title of "far right" is a false one when applied to these people.
This is the type of people Russia likes to hang out with. Birds of a feather flock together, and it's time we Americans recognized that the Evil Empire didn't die with the Cold War. It just went into hibernation. Now's its back, and looking for our blood.
This piece is missing the biggest factor; Turkey.
The Greeks have hated the Turks for generations and this is the primary reason for their high Military spending.
The Russians have also hated the Turks for generations.
Now we have an increasingly more Islamist Turkey, who want to revive the old Ottoman Caliphate; not the ISIS flavor Caliphate.
The Greeks are aware of this and so are the Russians.
It makes sense that they would try to force the Turks to defend on two fronts now that the US cannot be counted on to do anything constructive, (at least for the next two years).
How long before the new Greek government starts turning over NATO secrets to Russia?
Presuming that hasn’t happened already under previous governments. Or by EU double agents.
