These numbers remind us of the extent to which the continued Jewish commitment to the Democratic Party has become an anomaly. All the other ethno-religious groups that, like the Jews, formed part of the coalition forged by Franklin Delano Roosevelt in the 1930s have followed the rule that increasing prosperity generally leads to an increasing identification with the Republican Party. But not the Jews. As the late Jewish scholar Milton Himmelfarb said in the 1950s: "Jews earn like Episcopalians"—then the most prosperous minority group in America—"and vote like Puerto Ricans," who were then the poorest.

Jews also remain far more heavily committed to the liberal agenda than any of their old ethno-religious New Deal partners. As the eminent sociologist Nathan Glazer has put it, "whatever the promptings of their economic interests," Jews have consistently supported "increased government spending, expanded benefits to the poor and lower classes, greater regulations on business, and the power of organized labor."

This is as wrong as Medved's attempts to cover for the Jewish vote, blacks used to be republicans, and they switched in a single election to the democrat party, the instant and permanent switch was made in 1936.

Jews have never been republican, or conservative, they are not captives, they are well represented among the leaders and members and even the intellectual creators of the left and it's movements and organizations.

There seems be an obsession with Jews and their every action. I have rarely seen discussion of how Methodists vote or Episcopalians or Buddhists. But there is a daily focus on this tiny fraction of the population (2% or so). I am constantly bombarded with the news that most Jews are liberals. OK, I get it. They are. But why the mania about it?

Just like Christian denominations, most “Jews” are only genetically Jewish, they are not faithful, or as many of my Jewish friends tell me; “We are not practicing Jews.” Too many “Christians” are not practicing Christians either. In plainer words, both non-practicing Jews, and Christians in name only, are not followers of God, thus they are secular humanists practicing moral relativism, so they vote opposite of Godly morality.

Yet when the totals for everyone that says they are Christian and not Catholic (Protestant), are all added up, the majority of the Protestant Christian vote, always goes Republican, except in 1932, barely, and in 1936, and 1964 in the assassination tidal wave.

LOL, no there isn’t an obsession with the Jewish vote, it gets discussed sometimes like the Evangelical vote, the Catholic vote, the black vote, the women’s vote, the Hispanic vote, the Mormon vote, the Cuban vote, the millennial vote, the over 65 vote, etc, etc, etc.

So how does the author derive a figure of 57% of Jewish voters as voting for Obama without noting that 43% did not?

Why doesn’t he cite figures for Jewish registered voters who didn’t vote at all?

The fact of the matter is, he has NO way of knowing any of the information he spouts off.

Furthermore, if the article’s author had even an inkling of Jewish history, he’d be able to answer his own question of why some Jews are liberals, but he’d also ask why some Blacks and Hispanics, Asians, Indians, Irish, French, German etc. are conservative.

What I see is a poorly written hit piece, devoid of truth.

All of the projection is disturbing to read amongst many of the posters. Maybe these enlightened theoreticians on all things political with the Jewish people should poll the members here. I think they would be uncomfortable with the overrepresentation of FR posters within this very tiny religious minority group.

Absolutely spot on. I could not agree with you more. Taking it from another perspective, why are there so many Christian and Catholic liberals? It's a complex answer that involves cultural assumptions, willingness (or lack of) to take alternative views seriously and educational experiences.
