It's pretty funny, actually. He tries to have it one way by taking credit for lower gas prices to a crowd that probably includes a lot of folks who support high gas prices because it creates disincentives to driving and owning lower-mpg vehicles.

Then he tries to have it exactly the other way by predicting that prices are going back up and telling them they need to stick to higher-mpg vehicles.

So he wants credit for the lower gas prices, but not the credit for the spike in SUV sales
