Drive to Limit Washington's Power Wins Support of Tom Coburn
Washington Examiner ^ | February 10th 2015 | Paul Bedard

The national drive to encourage states to hold a convention to pass constitutional amendments to shut down Washington’s overreach and President Obama’s executive actions picked up the support of another leading conservative Tuesday, retired Sen. Tom Coburn.

The Oklahoma Republican said he will be a senior adviser to the Convention of States Project, based in Purcellville, Va.

“Our national soul is being corrupted by Washington’s unhindered and unconstitutional overreach,” said Coburn, a champion of efforts to limit Washington.

The effort already has the backing of Sarah Palin, radio talk show host Mark Levin, and two presidential candidates, Mike Huckabee and Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal.

The group has succeeded in winning support from nearly two dozen state legislatures to join in a res to join in a convention that would consider amendments under Article V of the Constitution.

Mark Meckler, co-founder of the Convention of States Project, said, “We are beyond pleased that Sen. Coburn has joined our effort, he has been a passionate leader for years in the effort to bring Washington under control and be responsive to the American people. This is confirmation that the Article V movement through our project is resonating across America and we anticipate even more success going forward with Sen. Coburn’s leadership.”

Article V ping! The internet will soon be Obama’s.

There is little time.

Outstanding about Tom Coburn! He should make an excellent ambassador for a Convention of the States. Thank you for these updates.

Looks like Obammie is on board with amending the Constitution too! Once again, be very, very careful about what we wish for!

President Obama: I’d love a constitutional amendment to reverse Citizens United

That could NEVER happen though, right?

You're 100% right. BUT...the mere fact that the left is paying attention and WILL enter the fray to get whatever they can out of the whole thing tells me we need to tread lightly.

I say we give it to him...

Amendment 28 - Repeal Amendment 11

Amendment 29 - Repeal Amendment 16

Amendment 30 - Repeal Amendment 17

Amendment 31 - Only a person who can legally vote may contribute to a political campaign, and can do so with no limits using post-taxed funds only. Entities not eligible to cast a vote may not contribute (Unions, law firms, PACs,Corporations, etc.)

Amendment 32 - Clarify 14th Amendment that citizenship is not conferred to children of non-citizens even if born in USA.

Amendment 33 - Non citizens are not eligible for any government benefits, federal or state, including but not limited to healthcare, welfare and education.

It's a start...

State legislators around the country have introduced more than 200 bills aiming to nullify regulations and laws coming out of Washington, D.C., as they look to rein in the federal government.

States Rise up Against Washington.

There is far more than a mere whiff of resistance in the air.

They have an open constitutional convention right now located at the SCOTUS and every other unelected area of the Federal Government, from the IRS to the EPA.

Regardless of the amendments proposed they must still be ratified by a super majority of State Legislatures. The last I checked they where overwhelmingly Republican and much closer to the average American than your every day Supreme Court Justice of Special Investigator at the IRS.

Article five is the last resort short of open rebellion to reign in an abusive power hungry National Government.

By his acts, by his diktats, Obama has repealed Article I Section 1 which established the American Republic.

There is absolutely nothing to lose, and everything to gain from an Article V convention to propose amendments.

I forgot a couple...

Amendment 34 - Withholding from any persons payroll payments is not allowed. Any and all taxes due from a person must be paid directly by that person, only, or by their estate if deceased.

Amendment 35 - All annual State and Federal tax deadlines will be on the last Friday of October.

Amendment 36 - All regular State and Federal elections will be held on the first Tuesday of November. Votes may only be cast in person on paper, to be counted by verifiable and auditable means, or electronically, with personal verification capability. Voters must provide verifiable identification and proof of citizenship and precinct residency prior to voting. All states will submit new voter registrations to a national database which will have the ability to purge duplicate registrations for new registrants from other states register.

I get that. I do. But I'm pretty sure the whole Article V thing will NOT go precisely as current supporters think it will, especially once the left realizes they better get on board, and get their interests on board.

Rather than the first Tuesday on November, it might be better to hold the elections the first Sunday in November — with the polls to open right after church lets out.

I’d prefer April 15th, unless the IRS is disbanded and Fair Tax becomes the law of the land.

They still have to get them passed by the states. A vast majority of the states are controlled by Republicans. They can propose anything. It is most likely that more conservative amendments would pass the amendment process considering the disparity in the Dem Rep make up of the state legislatures.

Leaving things as they are is not an option.

Agree. And overturning the 17th changes EVERYTHING! The big cities would no longer control the Senate!!!

Yes. That takes a Constitutional amendment. The only way to propose one is through article 5. No way the Congress pushes for the change.
