Want To Start A Blog in Philadelphia? You’ll Need A $300 License For That!
Libertarian Republic ^ | February 11, 2015 | by Grant Phillips

Licensing regulations reduce economic freedom by creating barriers to market entry. For example, in my current home of Philadelphia, bloggers are required to obtain a $300 permit from the city. Blogging is by no means a lucrative business. In fact, an estimated 80% of bloggers will never make more than $100 from their work. A city official ironically says Philadelphia “loves the self-employed”. These permit-happy bureaucrats fail to grasp basic economics: occupational licensing can be detrimental to the economy.

Thanks for pushing this issue, Laz. I doubt this is just a coincidence as the FCC is trying to grab control and regulate the internet.

Long live Laz.

Why can't there just be an alternative net?

Yes, surely.
Total chaos and zero credibility or verification are awesome things to include in your information flow.

Pretty much the same thing as believing cartoons are real.

Free speech includes the right to be dead-nutz wrong. That's why it's called free speech.

You can also apply discernment and be open to correction, as I demonstrated on this very thread.

It seems you would be open to the concept of licensed journalists. I sure hope that is not the case, bro, you would not like that world.

One thing I am certain of, is that technology will stay 20 steps ahead of legislation. They took 15 years or so to start seriously talking about 'regulating' the internet. A new internet could spring up in months, if need be. It may involve completely presently-unknown technologies.

They will not be able to keep up.

Relax! King Obama and his communists FCC will soon have total control over the Internet in all of United States and its possessions.

Ultimately...how could the city prove that you were blogging within the city limits? Further, lets assume that you lived outside the city, were a blogger, could they prohibit anyone who was a blogger from blogging within the city limits?

As you say..not only is this unconstitutional, it is unenforceable.

A) How are they going to know that you are “blogging” from within their jurisdiction?

They see that you have no visible means of support and that you seldom change clothes.

(B) Is there a fee to use a printing press within the environs of Philadelphia (”paging Dr. Benjamin Franklin!”)

Brer Ben PAID for that press.
Blogtards wander drunkenly off the street into the library.. for free.

(C) What constitutes “blogging” and how is that different from running a news site?

See above.

Is Matt Drudge a “blogger,” an aggregator or a newsman?

I'd say an aggregator.

Are Jim Robinson or Markos Moulitsas “bloggers?”

I know Jim ain't, never heard of the Greek-sounding Marco fellow.

It seems you would be open to the concept of licensed journalists.

It seems you would be closed to the concept of requiring "journalists" to have qualifications other than being able to stumble into a public library.
