The GOP's Electoral Cliff
Newsmax ^ | 2/18 | Dick Morris

The 3.8 percent point margin by which President Obama defeated Mitt Romney in 2012 clouds the challenge the Republicans face in 2016. Unless they are able to improve their standing by 5 to 6 points in the key electoral states, they cannot win.

Romney got 206 electoral votes (carrying his closest state, North Carolina, by only 2.2 points). To add to this total, much less to bring it up to the 271 needed to win, Republicans must carry a number of states where they lost by five or more points in 2012.

Ever see a list of states that have in the past voted for a conservative in greater numbers than voted for Romney in ‘12?

Who? Reagan? Not really a fair comparison. The country's changed a lot since the 80s and so has what it means to be a conservative.

A lot of Reagan's success relates to when he ran. You might as well say that Democrats should copy FDR or LBJ, because they racked up the largest percentage of the vote.

If you're talking about conservative Senators or Congressmen who got a higher percentage of the vote than Romney, didn't that tend to average out across the country -- Romney running ahead in some places and behind in others?

But that still doesn't answer the question about how many stay-at-homes were ideological conservatives and how many just didn't want to vote for the clueless rich guy, or about how many people specifically refused to vote Romney and how many had already given up on the GOP before 2012.

No.....the Obama team was laughing at the Romney numbers in the last week. Every one of their people that went on TV explained how the GOP numbers were wrong. Only the GOP believed their own numbers.

I don’t think there is any statistical evidence that significant numbers of conservatives voters stayed home in 2012. Certainly not enough to have flipped any state.

Yep I think about that a lot. Imagine Romney had won- ISILs, ISIS, Yazidi massacres most likely would not have occurred. Whatever Romney’s faults, he loves America and Israel and would have defended her without any hesitation. Valerie Jarrett, Eric Holder would have been kicked to the curb. Our “bowing” to Iran right now- via Valerie Jarrett’s influence would not be happening. He would not have shunned Israel’s leader. He would not be giving the American people the finger. The whole IRS fiasco. Oh and I wonder if our Seals who were blown out the sky would be alive today if Romney had been President. I truly believed they were betrayed either by the WH or insiders in the WH or cabinet, staff, DHS, ETC.

Yeah and now we have Satin incarnate unleashing hell on Christians and Jews, Conservatives. Not to mention the looming 5 million “new” voters for 2016 election. Not to mention the “dollars” 5 million illegal immigrants will drain from the taxpayers when they file their taxes going back 3 years and amending them; being able to vote, get DL, get SS, SSDI, SSI.

Obama and Dems plan is to over-run the population with Mexican voters to dilute the Conservative, Republican pool of voters.

Everyone has to pick their poison for the next election.

And recall how Obama and Dems chose a smaller theatre for acceptance speech? I remember the news media talking about the place that chose being so much smaller then his win in 2008. They truly thought they were going to lose- and we were winning up until a few hours before the voting ended. Then the numbers just continued to climb for Dems. I truly believe fraud votes were filtered in for the win either electronically or bags of ballots ready to flip the switch for the win.

It will never get better if the stupid Republicans insist on beginning their primaries in two states, Iowa and New Hampshire,

The core problem.

The walker recall election had pretty damn high voter turnout, the highest in 60 years.

The point is that the RATS got their voters out, but the conservative still won.

Read your article; the highest for a non-presidential election. Voter turnout in Wisconsin in 2012 was over 84% of registered voters. So no, the Dems didn't get their voters out.

The article is talking about ‘voting age adults’, not registered voters.

I have never seen an article that used those figures for voter turnout, most use registered voters.

I guess liberals had to spin the loss in terms that made them feel better.

Well then by comparison 71% of the voting aged adults in Wisconsin turned out for the 2008 presidential election. Still considerably higher than the recall.

Whatever, you can fail to see the point if you want.

A potus election would turnout more conservatives too. The RATS turned out their voters and still got their ass kicked.

Owebama won’t be on the 2016 ballot, blacks won’t turnout at 110% rates for Hillary.

I see the point you're trying to make, I just disagree with it. Wisconsin Dems turn out for presidential elections. That's why they elect Democrats to the Senate in presidential years and Republicans in off year and why they've gone for the Democrat in every presidential election since 1984. If Scott Walker had been forced to run in 2008 instead of 2010 then he may well not have won.

Maybe if we field a better candidate the outcome will be better.

You know, I hear what you’re saying and in some ways I don’t disagree - but I can’t wrap my head around this logic.

If we get another DEM president because we don’t vote for whoever opposes their candidate, then we shouldn’t post on this forum complaining about anything for the next 4 years.

We should just sit in the middle and suck on it.

Sure we can complain. Free Republic is a conservative site, not an exclusively Republican site. The problem is that if the Republicans nominate a pro-open borders, pro common core RINO like Jeb, then it does not really matter if the Dems beat the GOP. The RINO party is reaching the point of no return now if it really wants to rally behind a candidate who might as well be a dem. So, if a dem wins in 2016 over Jeb Bush, we can complain that there was unfortunately no better alternative to the dem on the ballot. And 1-2% better is not enough. I'd rather be able to say "I didn't vote for either one of them" when the choice is simply arbitrary. It would like choosing between Hitler or Stalin, or Shiites or Sunnis.

There's a reason some of us now call the two parties the Uniparty.
