For Asian Americans, a changing landscape on college admissions
LA Times ^

n a windowless classroom at an Arcadia tutoring center, parents crammed into child-sized desks and dug through their pockets and purses for pens as Ann Lee launches a PowerPoint presentation.

Her primer on college admissions begins with the basics: application deadlines, the relative virtues of the SAT versus the ACT and how many Advanced Placement tests to take.

Then she eases into a potentially incendiary topic — one that many counselors like her have learned they cannot avoid.

“Let's talk about Asians,” she says.

Lee's next slide shows three columns of numbers from a Princeton University study that tried to measure how race and ethnicity affect admissions by using SAT scores as a benchmark. It uses the term “bonus” to describe how many extra SAT points an applicant's race is worth. She points to the first column.

African Americans received a “bonus” of 230 points, Lee says. Asian Americans would lose out under affirmative action Asian Americans would lose out under affirmative action

She points to the second column.

“Hispanics received a bonus of 185 points.”

The last column draws gasps.

Asian Americans, Lee says, are penalized by 50 points — in other words, they had to do that much better to win admission.

“Do Asians need higher test scores? Is it harder for Asians to get into college? The answer is yes,” Lee says.

As time goes on, our living standards are going to go down.

Once it was about the best and the brightest building the future.

No more.

The color of your skin is more important than work or performance.

The cost of this idiocy is going to mount over the coming years.

It is an odd end-game. You hire up professors for hefty prices ($80k will barely get you a PhD guy these days). You bring him into the class. Because of the student tools used by the school....half the class will be marginally capable students....which you have to use the Bell Curve, but discover that probably forty percent of the people in the room aren’t capable of grasping the subject.

I would suggest taking this a step further....using the same tools to hire professors. It’d only take twenty years to turn a four-star school into a one-star school.

Yes, and saying that Princeton needs to accept more chinese is more of the same crap.

So instead of doing extra cirricular activities like chess club and violin , they need to learn how to walk around mumbling hip hop lyrics and draw using a can of spray paint.

And we wonder why the country is circling the drain.

The universities are just cutting their own throats with these policies.

It may not be immediate, but it will happen.

The reputation will drop. The Alumni who paid a lot for their education will stop donating. The minorities who attend (on scholarship) will never donate money to the school (They don't ever tip waitresses!).

My law school decided to open the floodgates to minorities. The school had to set up remedial English classes for those admitted minorities. And when these minorities graduated, almost all failed to pass the Bar Exam.

The schools reputation cratered, and the minorities couldn't become practicing lawyers. And a lot of Alumni stopped donating money. Who benefited?

Not to defend the admission policies, but I do notice that the Chinese tend to study for the exam, even stealing exams and studying just to memorize the answers. A lot of them seem to enter our universities but without the ability they claim to have coming into it. Like claiming to speak English, and having test scores to back it up... but having no actual mastery of the language.

This is especially true for rich Chinese (who send their kids in droves to Western countries). The poorer ones seem to be more legit though.

Yes, that's what studying means to them. I'm surprised people here believe the BS about the chinese being the best students in the universe and the hardest workers.

That race discount is stupid, unfair and most likely illegal. I’m just waiting for one of the Tiger Moms to get her dander up and call her lawyers about this discrimination. If the Asians score high, good for them. That means we all should apply ourselves more, and try harder to succeed. Me definitely included.

These absurd color-driven agendas are an affront to reason.

And let's all use performance-enhancing drugs too. And every other unethical scheme the chinese use.

Lots of great universities in China for them to go to.

Lots of American born Asians. You know, second generation, third generation. Probably don't speak Chinese.

Really.

Sorry to bust your bubble but in standard IQ tests Chinese are on average about 5 points ahead of European-Americans.

Doesn't take drugs. They are just smarter, on average.
