In April and May of 2012 There was a lot of news about F-22’s deploying to the United Arab Emirates. I said then, and still say that they were there to threaten Israeli military aircraft, not Iranian aircraft. I remembered that the Obama admin had outed an Israeli plan to attack Iranian nuclear sites from the north using an ally in that direction. The F-22’s were there to close off any Israeli attack on Iran.
F-22’s based in the UAE could shoot down anything they wanted to, anywhere they wanted to without so much as a peep from anyone, and the Israelis knew it.
Thus, it was either an empty threat, or the intent to conduct a special intercept mission.
Obama fancies himself the new Caliph.
I don’t know what to think. It’s in accordance with Obama’s character and loyalties, but that doesn’t mean he actually did it.
What about the possibility the story is true and Obama.gov leaked it ahead of Bibi’s speech because they fear the fallout if Bibi happened to announce it to Congress and the world tomorrow? Too Machiavellian?
There is no way that we are capping the entire middle east, and why would we still be protecting Iraqi airspace?
The areas of coverage would require multiple AWACS on station 24/7. And again, I can’t imagine that given what we have going on in Afghanistan and Syria. Our ISIS strikes in Northern Iraq are certainly don’t constitute a major air offensive.
Are there still any American Patriot batteries in Iraq? I don’t think so.
Interesting...and maybe it is not true, and they just put it out there because the boy king is miffed.
We have other assets in theater that provide coverage, from Air Force to Navy to whatever, and these assets provides us with very detailed coverage capability over Iraq.
In my 26 year military career I have always said that I would never go to war with Israel. The only possible way I would have fought the Israeli’s is if they invaded the US.
I wonder how many of our pilots would have had some sort of “malfunction” with either their aircraft or ordnance?
Depends on the flight path. Israel could fly through Jordan, Saudi Arabia, over the Gulf and into Iran without entering Iraqi airspace. It would mean a longer trip but I believe they could pull it off.

This, like John Semmons’ satire, is entirely believable, mostly due to a tendency we all have called “confirmation bias”.

Could be. As I said, I have no idea what to believe. The fact that we think it’s even possible the President of the United States threatened Israel over Iran makes me sick.
Been there done that. Making occasional strikes on ISIS does NOT mean whe have AWACs overlooking the area all the time or even most of the time, nor does it mean we have fighter CAP in place.
Without AWACS, the radar horizon and range are going to preclude Navy ships from keeping an eye on a strike transitting Iraq.

Never said we have constant AWACs or fighter CAP.
We have other methods that I am sure you are aware we use that do not involve manned flights to monitor/track airspace. . .and we do not fly ISR assets without a complete airspace picture, let alone during manned strikes.
Would Obama have told the US Air Force if the Planes were IAF or Iranian ?
