I think Mark Wahlberg was in it.

The cutter Neah Bay is home ported in Cleveland so they were already a long way from home.

I’m not sure if it applies to Coast Guard vessels, but the Treaty of Ghent, which ended the War of 1812, imposes strict limits on the number of naval vessels that either country can operate on the Great Lakes. If that is the case, they would have a lot of area to cover.

I know the Coast guard on the lakes works pretty closely with their Canadian counterparts. I know they don't worry about borders in the case of rescues. Just whoever is closest.

Just last summer I read about the coast guard responding to a boating accident on the Windsor side of the river. They took injured people to a waiting ambulance at a Canadian dock.

My understanding is that’s how it works with most emergency services. The treaty is a formality, but (theoretically, at least) it’s still binding.

Back in the late 70’s - early 80’s a group of ice fishermen were out on lake erie and a big section of ice broke off and sent them drifting on the lake.

Coast Guard rescued them off the ice flow with choppers. One guy had a brand new pick-up truck out there on the ice, they told him they didn’t rescue vehicles.

Long story short... The wind shifted and another guy saw the pick-up go down about 1/2 mile from shore in 8-10 feet of water. The guy got a salvage permit for the truck, hired a boat and diver. The diver filled the cab with inner-tubes, blew them up and they towed the truck to shore.

Turns out the original owners insurance was no good once he drove out on the ice, and the guy with the salvage permit got a brand new pick-up truck free!

To add insult to injury the original owner still had to pay back the loan on the truck.

Never take anything out on the ice you can’t afford to lose.

Lots of people drive onto the ice every winter, but Lake Erie is bad for having ice flows break off stranding fishermen.

A long time ago I had a foreman in the OSB plant I worked at in North Idaho. He took a brand new pickup out on the ice on one of the deep lakes up there. As far as I know it’s still on the bottom.
