Ruinous "Compassion" (the idiocy of the minimum wage - Thomas Sowell)

It is fascinating to see brilliant people belatedly discover the obvious -- and to see an even larger number of brilliant people never discover the obvious.

A recent story in a San Francisco newspaper says that some restaurants and grocery stores in Oakland's Chinatown have closed after the city's minimum wage was raised. Other small businesses there are not sure they are going to survive, since many depend on a thin profit margin and a high volume of sales.

At an angry meeting between local small business owners and city officials, the local organization that had campaigned for the higher minimum wage was absent. They were probably some place congratulating themselves on having passed a humane "living wage" law. The group most affected was also absent -- inexperienced and unskilled young people, who need a job to get some experience, even more than they need the money.

It is not a breakthrough on the frontiers of knowledge that minimum wage laws reduce employment opportunities for the young and the unskilled of any age. It has been happening around the world, for generation after generation, and in the most diverse countries.

The idiots who make these laws have no idea what it’s like to have a business. They think businesses exploit their employees.
They want all the means of production in the hands of the state.

If the KKK wanted to ruin black lives, they couldn’t do better than liberals have done.

1. Bad government schools with no incentive to teach.

2. A welfare system built around passivity and infantilism that discourages family formation, drives fathers out and leaves women little more than baby factories producing ruined children.

3. An immigration policy that encourages lighter skinned people of color to illegally enter the country, steal low wage entry level jobs and not integrate into American culture.

4. A criminal justice system that literally targets the children created by the welfare state. Once a felon their lighter skinned illegal alien people of color ‘co-minorityists’ get all the jobs.

If the KKK in the 1920s had laid out such a plan, what would liberals have said?

Failed ideas stick to liberals like barnacles to the hulls of ships.

We have to have a minimum wage until we seal our borders and enforce immigration laws. Can you imagine open borders and NO minimum wage? Good God we are talking Guatemala here.

The KKK was/is a Democrat hate group. It promulgated programs intended to keep the black man oppressed. Where do you think these ideas came from?

Higher minimum wages don’t cost jobs!

Ted Kennedy said so!

What makes you think minimum wage applies to undocumented illegal labor?

Yes. The need for illegal aliens (trying to be as un-PC as I can) will dry up, because Americans can be hired for cheap.

Kill the minimum wage - not only is it wrong as a communist idea, and dries up jobs in a closed system (such as a secure US), but also invites under-the-table activity with tiny wages for outsiders in the larger open system.

>>> “This is just one of many policies that allow liberals to go around feeling good about themselves, while leaving havoc in their wake.”

Sowell’s argument, logical as it is, will not make any ding in the liberals’ minds.

(1) make sure these liberals know the bulk of the minimum wage increase goes to the faceless union bosses, and organizers. Not the people they think they feel sympathetic.

(2) make sure they know there's nothing to stop them from ‘feeling compassionate’.
====> To help those Suzies and Joes Minimum Wage workers, start demand 5 bucks (minimum) “Compassion Fee” for every single meal they've been served, every goods/transaction/other services they receive. Think of those behind-the-sceneces minimum wage workers for each and every service/goods they charge. These will be the same people who cry they are the middle-class that's been squeezed by the heartless republicans.

Liberals, always so free with OTHERS’ money.
