California Announces $1 Billion Emergency Drought Relief Package
TIME ^ | March 19, 2015 | by Kate Pickert

As if Californians needed another reminder that their state is dangerously hot and dry, they got it on March 15 when more than 30 runners at the Los Angeles marathon were hospitalized due to record high temperatures. The late winter heat wave — the mercury climbed above 90 in the city and surrounding areas — offered stark notice that, four years into a severe drought, the Golden State remains desperately parched with little relief in sight.

“This is a struggle,” Brown reportedly said during a press conference announcing the package. “Something we’re going to have to live with. For how long, we’re not sure.”

While the legislation includes millions of dollars in emergency aid, it also earmarks $660 million for flood prevention. Brown explained that flood control and drought relief were of a piece, according to the Los Angeles Times, describing them as “extreme weather events” related to climate change.

The new measures come two days after state officials voted March 17 to enact some of the broadest and strictest statewide water limits in California history. Outdoor lawn and landscape watering, which accounts for about half of all consumption in urban areas, will be limited to two days per week.

~~snip~~

In the meantime, officials are hoping public information campaigns might be more effective. One water district in Northern California has adopted “Brown is the New Green” as a new motto, encouraging residents to let their lawns die to conserve water. “People should feel really proud of having a brown lawn,” says Famiglietti.

You’re adjacent to the world’s largest body of water. Desalination, anybody?

Two days a week? Doesn’t Moonbeam realize that thousands of “undocumented” landscapers, gardeners and lawn keepers will be put out of jobs that Americans won’t do?

Whew, maybe we’ll finally get to tax ourselves to pay for the take down of the evil dams on the Klamath.

Except they won’t do that either. They just realized they could this past year, but they don’t have the electrical power surplus needed for desalination because they chased the plants out of state and closed perfectly good nuke plants.

I say let them deal with the problems they created by themselves. CA refused to bail out TX in the 80s when they needed help, CA can go pound sand.

Not without nucular power plants.

describing them as “extreme weather events” related to climate change.

And I was reading an article earlier this week on how the weather in the 20th century was an anomaly and California historically does get that much rain. It is now returning to normal. I realize that is climate change but not the "Climate Change" they are talking about.

“People should feel really proud of having a brown lawn,” says Famiglietti.

What would make me proud would be to see the people of California rise up and hang from street lights, every one of the socialist/communists that reside in the State Capital and sundry municipalities.

Florida went through this recently.
It’s called a severe drought.

It’s a continuous rolling condition, planet wide in scale.

What infuriates me is the building that continues to go on around here - such as massive condo projects, each of which will need water - yet we're told to cut back? (this is Southern California).

And Brown welcomes and even encourages even more immigrants to settle here? I read where some lakes are now forbidding any kind of boating b/c there's not enough water in them.

In my Southern California town, the water police go by every morning with a clip-board to check for water on the sidewalks during forbidden days. My elderly neighbor has already been warned.

I'm going to take a trip up the 5 next week to visit family in Northern California - I expect the signs will be out... like this:

I'm still waiting for the media to discover how much fed and state governments have contributed to my obligation to not flush until it is absolutely necessary.

Can't Obama make it rain there by executive order?

Oh,
Did I fail to mention the "drought resistant" front lawns we're supposed to install?
...apparently back lawns are off the table.

Scalp your front yard, smother & spray the bare dirt, spend a few thou on plastic cover, rocks, sand, and cactus & other stuff that grows in the desert.
Collect about two thou from the state.
Then spend as much (or more) on maintenance as you did before or fight weeds and overgrowth for the life of your ecologically correct wasteland.

On the other hand, my dog loves the variety it affords during his mandatory walks.

What if you just tilled it up and let it go to weeds? Wouldn’t that be about as au naturel as it gets?

Texas’ economy collapsed in 1986 when the oil price crash came; Texas’ economy was basically oil, then cows and some finance. Being Democrat at the time, Texas went to the Federal government to ask for help. The California reps and senators were some of the most vehement opponents of such a thing, despite being Democrats themselves.

You need to build a pipeline from the Missippi to Califorina. Just run it down th center of Interstate 40.

This is a serious suggestion. Why is this not being proposed?

Sorry no that won’t work. California and the West will have to find solutions or close it down.
