Kelli Ward, a physician and state senator in Arizona, says she might challenge Sen. John McCain in the states Republican primary next year.
In recent weeks, Ward has been busy meeting with national conservative groups that back challengers to Republican incumbents while trying to determine if she could raise enough money to mount a credible campaign.
In a Thursday interview with The Daily Caller, Ward argued that McCain, who is 78, would be vulnerable in a Republican primary. She suggested she would contrast herself with the longtime senator over his support for comprehensive immigration reform.
Here is a transcript of that conversation, lightly edited for clarity and length.
Should you jump into this race, why would John McCain be vulnerable?
Ward: Well, I think that people in Arizona, from what I can tell going around the state here over the last several weeks, are ready for a change. But not just change for the sake of change, they want positive change. They want real representation. They want two-way conversations between them and the person representing them.

Anybody would be better than that Democrat in an R jersey.
He crushed JD Hayworth last time, who was a pretty well known conservative Rep. As long as McLame has Palin on his team, he’s unbeatable in my view.
I doubt Sarah will indorse or campaign for McCain this time. She owed him for 2008, but that debt’s been paid.
I will keep an eye on Ward. May contribute to her campaign, if it means a chance at getting rid of Juan.
Hayworth has his issues, too. He’s well known, but not a sterling alternative (I damn well would have voted for him, over McLoser). A fresh face could beat a 78 year old McCain. Our best hope is that it looks competitive and he opts to spend time with his family rather than service into his mid-80s.
Hope McCain loses in the primary.
McLame has great longevity genes, and I suspect his long term goal it to go direct from the Capitol Building to the mortuary.
He certainly has plenty of dough to retire on if he wanted to.
There are a lot of people here who refuse to acknowledge that she was paying off a debt.
Sorry, wrong poster.

If we can remove McCain from the senate, the next one to go should be the “FLAKE” in Arizona.
Absolutely correct.
Makes me wonder about AZ voters. I live in VA and knew Flake was a cheap labor importer when he was in the House. I would have never voted for him to be Senator.
It didn't matter to me - I voted for him. My argument was that Hayworth could be caught behind the barn doing strange things to farm animals and I still would have voted for him. The main goal was to get rid of McCain. In six years we could dump Hayworth if he turned out less than sterling, but it would have been six years without McC selling us out again.
Sadly, the purists held their nose, and voted 'the lesser of two evils", aided and abetted by the Gruberites.
