And so begins what I call the "surrender your town or we WILL blast it to hell" stage of the war.
Which most of them eventually did, if they didn't have an SS pistol to the back of their heads.
The maps vanished with the troops they purported to show.
There are still some eastern maps. I’ll post a few this weekend.
Viva la France!
:-)
The Frogs. Ugh!
Its not that we pulled their ass out of a crack twice in the 20th century that makes me resentful.
Its the fact that we lost the gold backed dollar because of what Nixon called the "gold window".
Frogs brought their $42 per ounce dollars and demanded an ounce of gold under the Bretton Woods agreement. Back in France gold was selling for $300 an ounce.
The Frogs, ugh!
I read Bradley's Flags of Our Fathers but forgot the details of the Marines' enormous casualties.
De Gualle told de Lattre, "Even if the Americans do not help you, you must get across the Rhine".
Regards Patton and Hammelburg I wonder how much influence, if any, the Philippine POW raids had on his decision? Obviously Col Waters was the main factor in Capt Baum’s wild ride:-(
And the big difference between the Philippine raids and Hammelburg was intel. The Philippine raids were fairly well planned and had the advantage of a mostly friendly population for intel gathering purposes. Hammelburg was a shot in the dark.
Also, in Farago’s bio of Patton IIRC Patton claimed his only mistake at Hammelburg was not sending a whole Combat Command!

They were real big on restoring their national honor.
Can’t say I blame them much really, after the historic humiliation they had suffered at the hands of the Nazis.
Personally, I’m happy that they they were willing to fight. Every Nazi they killed was one less we had to kill, or was still alive to kill our guys.
They pretty much cleared out the Black Forest, if my memory serves.
They were a colossal pain in the rear end to our generals, but I’m pretty sure our guys appreciated the assist anyway.
He might have been right. And he probably could have justified it. There were a whole lot more Americans there than just his son-in-law. My memory says it was like 1500 or something.
