WHY IT MATTERS: The Saudi-led intervention in Yemen
Washington Post ^ | March 26, 2015 | AP

Airstrikes by Saudi Arabia against Iran-backed Shiite rebels in turbulent Yemen have added a regional dimension to the conflict in the Arab world’s poorest country. Five reasons why the world should care about what is happening there:

Yemen is home to al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, or AQAP, which Washington has viewed as the most lethal branch of the global network founded by Osama bin Laden. AQAP has been linked to several attempted attacks on the U.S., including the underwear bomb plot of December 2009, and it claimed the January killings at the offices of the French satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo.

President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi was a close U.S. ally in the fight against al-Qaida, but he fled Yemen on Wednesday as his forces were routed by the Shiite rebels, known as Houthis, and loyalists of former President Ali Abdullah Saleh.

The Houthis, who control the capital Sanaa and nine of Yemen’s 21 provinces, are sworn enemies of al-Qaida, but they are also hostile to the U.S. Their slogan is “God is great, death to America, death to Israel, damnation to the Jews, victory for Islam.”'

The U.S. drone campaign against AQAP is now in disarray. About 100 U.S. military advisers withdrew last weekend from al-Annad air base, where they had been leading the campaign. The Houthis have overrun the base, which was hit in Thursday’s air raids.

For more than a decade, the CIA and the military’s Joint Special Operations Command have carried out parallel targeted killings in Yemen, and the U.S. military has trained elite Yemeni counterterrorism units. In September, President Barack Obama cited Yemen as a success story when he detailed his strategy against the Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria, which involves targeted U.S. strikes on militants with the cooperation of friendly ground forces.

The Saudis and other non crazy people in the Middle East are beginning to get rid of the problems that Emir Obozo overlooks.

“Seem to recall our Predator drones were being controlled from ground stations in Yemen and other locations.”

Not any more.

Remember Emir Obozo recently said that Yemen was another one of his successes in the Middle East.

The Saudis are probably allowing us to set up operations and control of our drones in their country.

"Intervention"

Nope, no media bias here. Just an "intervention", like you would have with a child's temper tantrum.

Well, it looks like the USA will be providing intelligence for airstrikes in support of al Quaeda in the Arabian Peninsula for a while, instead of against them.

Both Iran and Saudi Arabia now have their regular militaries engaging in combat. The Sunni/Shia War is growing and spreading.

Poor Iran. Everybody is ganging up on them.

Maybe John Kerry can negotiate this. Oh wait, nevermind.

That’s a good question, I would prefer we let them all fight it out until their is one identifiable islamic entity standing, then go in and eviscerate them.

In the meantime we encourage and enable Israel to wipe out Iran’s nuke capabilities.

Of course all this mute until we topple the obama regime one way or the other.

“World War III has begun.”

I think so. The 150,000 soldiers the Saudis sent there are to kill those backed by Iran, so this is Saudi Arabia attacking Iran. More end day prophesy is coming true.

President Barack Obama cited Yemen as a success story

And I'm sure he still stands by the dronings as a success.

No one knew who, or which side in Yemen was being droned.

Traditional Americans and members of the civilized world think of success differently from the Shiite in Chief.

The Saudis are realists. The Emir is the potentate of the Honolulu Chum Gang.

Well Jim, at least it isn’t our blood and treasure being used up this time. Maybe Obozo forgot to kiss the new Saudi King’s ring (and nether region) when he made his last visit. Or maybe this current “Fat Freddie” Saudi King isn’t content to see his “kingdom” overrun by the rebels down in Yemen and knows Obozo won’t lift a finger to help. Count me as “cautiously optimistic” that this new direction is a positive thing.

World War III has begun.

Fighting in Yemen is hardly a new and different thing. That country has been at war with it self for centuries.
