Andreas Lubitz Religion Debate: Germanwings Crash Raises Questions Over Pilot's Faith

Questions about the religious background of Andreas Lubitz, the Germanwings pilot who investigators said deliberately crashed a plane in the French Alps this week, killing all on board, have sparked outrage and debate about whether such information is relevant to the investigation. When a reporter asked French Prosecutor Brice Robin of Marseille, during a news conference Thursday, whether he knew Lubitz’s religion, Robin said he did not know and added, “I don’t think that’s where the answer to this lies.”

The question suggested that Lubitz’s religious background was relevant to the investigation behind the pilot’s alleged deliberate downing of Germanwings Flight 9525 on Tuesday. Robin said the crash did not show any signs of terrorism. Some were appalled by the reporter’s inquiry.

“This line of questioning makes no sense to me whatsoever,” said Elizabeth Shakman Hurd, an associate professor of political science with a courtesy appointment in religious studies at Northwestern University in Illinois. “I find it disturbing and depressing that at a time like this some people feel compelled to search desperately for explanations that presume religious causation.”

Translation: He converted to Islam and we do not want to offend.

It is more than that and the reason the airline refused to give out pilots names for so long. The governments need time to scrub as much of that information as possible that might surface because it has become a massive problem for them.

If it is true he converted to islam then every airline has a huge problem from this moment forward. They either have to fire every muslim pilot for fear of sudden jihad syndrome and get sued for discrimination or they get huge lawsuits from families of dead passengers resulting in every case of sudden jihad syndrome for the airline knowingly putting peoples lives at risk by hiring a muslim pilot. The airlines and governments forcing the no profiling rules are in huge trouble or will be when it finally happens if this is not a case.

Liberals across the Western world's governments now have the catch 22 their stupidity has created in importing muslims and forcing them to be treated as equals and all religions the same....it was just a matter of time or is a matter of time until this problem slapped them in the face.

My take from this is that you have to have a mental condition in order to convert to islam.

I agree the question should be asked and answered.

Though if he’d been a Muslim intent on attacking the infidel, I would assume he’d at least have tried to hit something on the ground that would hurt the enemy.

Instead, he flew into a mountain, which indicates either incompetence or no interest in hurting people on the ground.

search desperately for explanations that presume religious causation
No one is presuming religious causation. They are simply asking.
However, YOU are presuming/insisting that there is no religious causation.
How can you hope to arrive at the truth when you immediately rule out possible causes?

Because they won’t tell us what they found at his residence, except that they believe it is relevant.

Torn-up note from doctor stating that he was unfit to fly.

Stop using logic!

Why are you so obsessed with verifying information?

Can't you just enjoy jumping to a good conclusion like everyone else?

There is no evidence this is connected to Islam. Get over it.

Articles on this guy last night were stating he had spend some time lately staying at a mosque. So yes, there is a possibility. Whether true or not, or if it is like so many other instances is getting scrubbed so the fact can be obscured and hidden....who knows at this point. Do you trust the media and governments at this point to tell you it was about islam?

The question on his religion is valid either way.

The politicos are deathly afraid of incurring the wrath of the bearded ones.
Just give us the truth.

Only one article last night and it’s a German blog, same one linked earlier on the thread.

The only thing new is the girlfriend he had an argument with was not from Germany, but this is hearsay until someone sources even that.

Right now the strongest evidence of motive are the torn up doctor’s notes declaring him unfit to fly. So far that’s it.

So he could have been a space alien because you can’t rule out anything.
Or maybe he died at childbirth....hmmmm....

That IS how I get most of my exercise. :)

People are weird. They jump to conclusions based on zero data, as in this case and the “hands up, don’t shoot” meme from Ferguson, then often refuse to modify their conclusion when actual data becomes available.

I’ve been accused in the past of being “pro-Muslim” for pointing out when accusations against Islam are untrue. Apparently we’re just supposed to go along with lies if they seem likely to promote our cause.

Personally, I think there is LOTS of perfectly accurate ammo to use against Islamism, and that firing stuff in the direction of Islam that is easily proven to be untrue simply weakens the value of the true accusations.

True, but if he is Muslim, you can sure say “I told you so!” in a loud voice.

Maybe his religion is atheist nihilism and those 149 passengers were merely the irrelevant descendants of microbes? Maybe he hated his Creator for creating him and wanted to go out with one colossal act of emotional defiance against the coming judgment, hating his fellow men as he hated himself.

I get very suspicious of people who claim to be conservatives, yet who think like leftists: eschewing logic, lying “for the greater good”, etc.

Please provide the link to the articles. The most that I have seen are reader comments to articles consisting of speculation and rumors that are no more probative or persuasive than the rumors and speculation that I am reading here on FR.

I found this.

Live Reporting

Germanwings has issued a statement confirming it did not receive a sick note from Andreas Lubitz.

The airline said: “Currently there is media coverage that the co-pilot of flight 4U 9525 was given a sick note for the day of the accident on Tuesday. Germanwings declares that a sick note for this day was not submitted to the company.

“This corresponds to the insights of the senior prosecutor of Dusseldorf,” the statement continued.

Duesseldorf University Clinic says Mr Lubitz had been receiving treatment there - but denies that this was for depression, contrary to some media reports. The clinic says it cannot give further details because of rules governing patient confidentiality.

“This line of questioning makes no sense to me whatsoever,” said Elizabeth Shakman Hurd

So...what you are saying Elizabeth...is that you have never, ever heard of any Muslim fly an airliner directly into an a large stone/concrete structure in order to kill himself and all on board in the name of his chosen deity?

Come on...think a little...you'll come up with it.

LOL, What?

There are about 15,000 (2006) Muslim converts of German ancestry in Germany. I've not seen any estimates for the number of space aliens.

The co-pilot possibly being a Muslim can't be ruled out until the question is answered.
