Been there. A wealthy enclave, but few people seemed happy. Strange place.

Of course, 8 bucks for a beer, and 10 for a Whopper didn’t help me love Singapore, either : )

If you have been to Beverly Hills, the prices pretty much mirror it.

I’d wash my son’s mouth out with soap and give him a well-deserved lashing.

That kind of behavior is inexcusable, period.

You may jest, however, LKY ‘created’ a jewel in the Far East from the chaos that was multicultural Singapore. I lived there when it was ‘wild’ enuf... YES, certain measures were taken to ‘curb’ the ‘animals’... one could not go into a housing elevator without the smell of urine because that is what they DO. Ammonia detectors/cameras were installed and culprits were pictured and arrested.

The mix of cultures there were a hot bed of calamity if not for LKY. YES, he was a dictator in a sense, but a far seeing business oriented (no pun intended) CONSERVATIVE who wanted Singapore to be a safe harbor for all. He created ORDER under the law.

NO slippery slopes (again, nothing intended!) allowed; if you broke the law, you were punished. There and then.

Seems that Singapore reaches for the future by going medieval.

maybe even a compassionate conservative dictator no less.. unique for his time,, so was ho chi minh.

one led his nation back from destruction, the other toward it.. both in a quest for freedom for their people.

I enjoyed my time their last fall.. I can only imagine it 70-75 years ago.

Park Chung Hee was a conservative and benevolent dictator. Just the Malaysian Muslims weren’t well organized as North Korea.

“Conservative dictator” is an oxymoron.

At least as far as any American conservative’s concept of conservatism.

And, there is nothing benevolent about a dictatorship with draconian laws.

This guy seems to have a bizarre animus against Christianity.

Lee Kuan Yew was not religious.

Christianity is tied with Islam in Singapore for third place, behind Buddhism and agnosticism.

It's silly to imprison this clown, especially since his goal was to be imprisoned.

In a very crowded city-state, of course they are. I think I have read that about half the people in Hong Kong, another city-(semi)state, live in some kind of subsidized or public housing.
