One of the great things Hillsdale college has recently done is stopped giving teaching degrees without a 4 year degree in something else.

I agree with this approach.

“sent by a leftist activist”

Yep, anything for their warped cause.

I believe the thinking was that America is producing too many teachers who know how to teach but don’t know anything else. They then use the degrees to teach ideologies rather than math, science, history, etc.

Another nice thing about Hillsdale is that parents can know that their kids are in a safe place without a lot of partying going on. Hillsdale is a small rural farm community and big parties aren’t going to be tolerated. They are college kids and there are some parties but they tend to be small quiet affairs.

Before the left destroyed liberal arts education, it was actually considered valuable because the education reached into so many other areas-- history, philosophy, music, art and design, etc.

Up until about the mid 1960s, businesses actually sought these graduates because they were so adaptable to so many situations which the changing business environment needed.

My uncle, just out of the air force from World War II was majoring in physics, spotted this trend, and ended up being a professor of sociology as a career.

That was before the libtards got ahold of the department and transformed it into an amalgamation of victimology from a sociological viewpoint.

“I don’t always talk to liberal arts majors. But when I do, I order a LARGE fries”.

BOL!

I received my BS in BusAd in the early 1960’s. The job market at that time was tight supposedly.

It was only tight for the liberal arts majors. My engineering buddies and my BusAd peers/buddies had many job offers to pursue.

The liberal artisies had three choices:

1. Go get their masters and Phds and hope that they got a job teaching the same old stuff to future unemployables.
2. Somehow get a teacher’s certificate to teach something in some public school.
3. Hope that some corporation with good training programs would hire them and train them to do something to earn a paycheck.

Flash forward to the late 1980’s, the same cycle was still going on. Kids with good engineering degrees got jobs. Nephews and nieces with solid MBAs with real internships got good jobs and still have good jobs.

One of our younger relatives with a double engineering degree labeled the liberal arts degrees as IEDs or instant unemployment degrees.

At that time in our recent history, those with IED’s had the same three options as noted above.

Flash forward to the past few years. Still grads with good engineering degrees are getting job offers. Those with good STEM backgrounds and degrees are getting great offers and even high paying internships. MBA’s with good STEM backgrounds are doing okay.

The IED grads have the same 3 options as noted above for the past 50+ years.

The IED grads often end up in social so called works or a paycheck for showing up for a government paycheck. 99.99% of these people are card carrying rats and hate America.

Funny, my best college pal graduated with a BA in English Lit in 1974 and she ended up a senior vp with the largest pr firm in New York City. Why? She could write grammatically and succinctly; and had superb people skills. I believe Bill Bennett got his degree in Philosophy - didn’t hurt him much.

I’m taking the on-line course of the Federalist Papers from Hillsdale as we speak. Always good to brush up.

Fortunately, my Mother was a Reading/Writing and English teacher, and she helped me with those basics.

In my senior year in high school, my home room teacher was an excellent English teacher. She and my Mother enabled me to ace my two college English courses. Which were all, I needed in 5 plus decades of life.

Flash forward a few decades after my college years and one of my sons is in high school, and he wrote a paper that was terrible in English but got him an A in a tech course.

I told him, he needed to study some basics in English. He informed me that he would hire a good secretary when he finished college in engineering.

He did, and she is now his executive assistant. She has been with him for decades. He is a vice president in a heavy duty real tech world. She does his reports/bid proposals now, as she did then. He provides the tech know how, and she puts it into a written format.

When I finished my MBA except for my thesis, I went to a lady whose business was to put into a book the ideas of the MBA student. I paid her a good 4 figure price at that time. Between the two of us, we did a great job. She had a Masters in English and couldn’t find a job. So, she did the finishing work on her husband’s masters and prepared and excellent thesis from his research. After that, anyone, who didn’t use her services, usually didn’t do that well.

The so-called arts are a home for every sort of perversion and tyranny over all who do not believe exactly as the artsy believe. We must be forced to support that which we abhor through taxation rather than choose to support what we like through purchasing it.

"I like Sowell, but I do not think he is a genius. Just a conservative thinker (which is as rare as a genius)."

IMHO, Thomas Sowell's genius is to cut through noise and explain the basic concepts in such a way that any lay person can understand them.

Reducing information to basics and playing it back in plain language is genius. And rare.

For proof, read any of his economics textbooks.

It must be nice to hire underlings to speak and write decent English for you!

I prefer to learn the basics myself.

Excellent! Please allow me to recommend this one. As I recall, it has no graphs or equations in it.

I also enjoyed this.

All are good. ;-)
