Didn't see this posted yet. Hammerschmidt, elected in 1966, was the first Republican Congressman from Arkansas since reconstruction and he survived a close call with Bill Clinton in 1974. Unfortunately, Clinton went on to be elected state AG 2 years later, his political stock having risen with a near-win in the GOP-leaning district.
