Didn't see this posted yet. Hammerschmidt, elected in 1966, was the first Republican Congressman from Arkansas since reconstruction and he survived a close call with Bill Clinton in 1974. Unfortunately, Clinton went on to be elected state AG 2 years later, his political stock having risen with a near-win in the GOP-leaning district.

RIP.

May he rest in peace. I knew him fairly well. He was a good man and a fine politician.

For a while he was among the few rays of light from that state...and unlike Clinton & Pryor he was not a draft dodger.

Yes, he was one of the few rays of light in Arkansas politics. He served in the U.S. House of Representatives for 26 years. Here is his bio: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Paul_Hammerschmidt

Was he a Reagan delegate in 1976 or a Ford guy?

He not only served in uniform, he flew transports in the India-China-Burma area and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross four times!

I’m not sure whether he was a Reagan or Ford delegate in 1976.

Yes, contrast with Newt, Dick C., Dick A., Jeb, etc. etc. That was a generation of men as opposed to a generation of excuse makers.
