Missouri Republicans are trying to ban food stamp recipients from buying steak and seafood
Washington Post ^ | 04/03/2015 | By Roberto A. Ferdman

In 2013, Fox News proudly broadcast an interview with a young food stamp recipient who claimed to be using the government benefit to purchase lobster and sushi.

"This is the way I want to live and I don’t really see anything changing," Greenslate explained to Fox. “It’s free food; it’s awesome."

That story fit a longtime conservative suspicion that poor people use food stamps to purchase luxury items. Now, a Republican state lawmaker in Missouri is pushing for legislation that would stop people like Greenslate and severely limit what food stamp recipients can buy. The bill being proposed would ban the purchase with food stamps of "cookies, chips, energy drinks, soft drinks, seafood or steak."

"The intention of the bill is to get the food stamp program back to it's original intent, which is nutrition assistance," said Rick Brattin, the representative who is sponsoring the proposed legislation.

Curbing food stamp purchases of cookies, chips, energy drinks, and soft drinks at least falls in line with the food stamp program's mission to provide nutrition. Nutrition experts are already discussing whether to remove unhealthy items from the list of foods participants can buy.

But seafood and steak? Seafood has been shown, time and again, to be a healthy part of any diet. And steak is such a broad category that it's essentially banning people from buying any flat cuts of beef, from porterhouse to flank.

"It just seems really repressive," said Mark Rank, a professor at...

You “judged” and called others “tyrant.” You are judged by your own measure.

It’s food for thought and it won’t cost you one food stamp.

“Who pays the piper calls the tune. If you don’t like the music hire your own musician.”

well I wouldn’t be so cocky about it. With a few exceptions it is the democrats and RINOs that are calling the tunes. I’ll have none of it.

No it isn’t bull. Your post is bull.

You should talk to your doctor about upping your meds. Then you might be able to formulate a rational response.

Have you priced out tuna? It’s expensive. The 12 oz store brand canned tuna is $2 here. The real weight is 6 oz of meat after draining out the water (here, kitty kitty!). That works out to $5.33 per pound of canned tuna. I haven’t been able to afford canned tuna for 2 years because it wasn’t on sale last Easter. I bought 21 cans (all they had) which was on sale two weeks ago for $1.33 a 12 oz can (cough, 6 oz meat) and was hoping it’d be on sale again to stock up but no luck. Those 21 cans will have to last until next Easter or longer.

73% hamburger is too expensive, too. It’s close to $4/lb. I’m using the last of some I found on sale that was soon to expire from about a year ago. It’s mostly pork and chicken these days.

Then DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!

Gather with like minded men. Attend meetings. Hold them accountable.

If you are living off of money taken from me at gunpoint by the IRS, then my attitude towards you is “work or die”.

Her hair had not been washed and was uncombed

While I understand your point, combing your hair doesn't cost a dime. More was going on with her.

I guess you don’t like being called out for your hypocritical viewpoints, so, you have to assume that I’m on meds. Hahaha - nothing could be further from the truth. Your views are tyrannical and you know it. Embrace it - it’s true.

That is a possibility as well. Those who don’t qualify for food stamps get those who do to get them steaks, etc., and pay half price for it. They are equally at fault.

Everyone makes out on Socialism except the taxpayers who finance it. The corporations, their suppliers, farmers, store owners and the end users. The rest of us are perpetually screwed. It’s the ongoing rape and destruction of the middle class.

We couldn’t afford regular milk so it was powdered milk. Gawd awful nasty stuff.

Having powdered milk by itself was pretty bad, but my mom would make it half and half. As I got older when someone would say "half and half" I wouldn't think "cream."

One memory I have is sneaking into the frig at night and taking a couple huge swigs of whole milk.

You really aren’t capable of fashioning an actual argument. I bet you retired from a government office. That explains your bizarre perspective.

By the way, I assume you’re on meds because there is really something wrong with your “thought process.” I’ve put people out of the Air Force who weren’t as “off” as you. Seriously, get help.

While what you say may be true in some cases, it is the apple cart that EBT users ride in, that will topple over. Abuse of a system that depends on honesty is what creates socialist hell for all.

Its unfortunate for the sincere recipients but that is the way the free Chips-AHOY cookie crumbles.

I wonder if MREsare more expensive than regular food.

Here’s an idea: we already give welfare school kids breakfast and lunch. Add in an after-school meal as well. And let welfare toddlers eat at school in between student meals. Then cut off food stamps entirely.

Just have them use the same account for all “free lunch” programs. All kids that use the program have that amount removed from the household EBT.

Watch that after school and summer feeding die.

Well, seafood is healthy, but if the food stamp recipients are living in Missouri they should be helping the Missouri economy. If they are going to get lobster it should be lobster caught in Missouri by Missouri fishermen.

I use the crockpot to make tough, cheap cuts of meat that I WORKED to pay for taste as good as EBT steaks.
