Mitch McConnell: Congress to 'respond legislatively' to Iran nuclear bill
Washington Examiner ^ | 4/6/15 | Kelly Cohen

Fresh off a trip to the Middle East, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is insisting that Congress get a chance to review and approve a nuclear deal with Iran.

"To the detriment of international security […] the Obama administration has always approached the goal of these negotiations as reaching the best deal that is acceptable to Iran, rather than what should be our national goal: ending Iran's nuclear program," the Kentucky Republican said in a statement Monday.

McConnell visited Israel, Jordan, Iraq and Afghanistan last week with a Senate delegation. On Thursday, a framework for a nuclear deal with Iran, the U.S. and five other world powers was announced — much to the dismay of many Republican lawmakers.

No, you don’t need to pass a law giving you the right to approve the treaty. It isn’t a treaty until you approve it.

In the absence of senate approval, its a fake treaty. Its a dead letter.

This is actually a sleight of hand giving O exactly what he wants. If McConnell can’t get the law passed and signed, then does that mean the treaty stands? It will be interpreted that way by the obamists, and thats what McConnell is setting up. Pretending to fight for us while clearing the way for the obamists yet again.

The Iran deal is either good or bad, needed or not needed. Obama is the President, God forbid, and he gets to do these negotiations. With that said, review of the deal and a 67 vote majority in the Senate is required of any international treaty. There is no debate on this fact. Why is everyone acting like this is in doubt. No Corker amendment needs to be passes to assure this fact.

Now, if they want to pass some other hurdle...like allowing the House a chance to weigh in as well....that would take enactment of new law. Perhaps that is what the Corker Amendment is all about.

In any case, it seems absurd that the senate is fighting for a power it already has. Secondly, why is the Preisdent of the United States trying to go around the Senate once again? For this deal with Iran to truly last, he Must have the Senate on board.

More to the point, Obama can argue that the Congress is wrong to disagree with his approach to Iran, but there is no intellectually valid argument for why the Congress shouldn’t have a say.

This deal is nothing more than ink on paper if the Senate doesn’t ratify it, period. Obama is one man. He’s not a King.

Yeah that doesn’t make any sense at all. They want to pass a law asking to review the treaty? Not only they don’t have to do that, but Obama could veto it assuming it got through Congress. Or maybe not. Maybe Obama would sign it. Then what?

This is all just part of a larger problem of the abdication of congressional authority to the executive branch. And I do understand why we (they) would want and need a leader, but they have set up a giant apparatus in the federal government that really only answers to the executive. Sure they have oversight but nearly every agency answers to the cabinet and the executive picks the cabinent. And the agency executives outlast many different presidents. Where the real power lies.

It's been ventured that, if Obumer vetoes the bill, there are enough 'Rat votes to override the veto. If that's truly the case, it would serve as a massive rejection of Obummer's diplomacy.

I wonder, though, if there would be 13 'Rats willing to go that far.

You will need more than that when Graham, Collins, and the other usual suspects vote with the pResdient.

I think you got this right. Mcconnel is setting it up so that a failure of this vote will give OBama the PR win to claim that the treaty has been approved. A treaty is not a law until its approved by congress, its not an automatic law simply because Obama agreed to it

Good idea Mitch, that way you can pretend to be opposing Obama while his veto means that you are not stopping him in any substantive way. Mitch is more dangerous than Obama, because Mitch is what prevents conservatives from being able to stop Obama.

Senator, I hate to be the one to break it to you, but Obama doesn’t give a rats hind end about you, Congress or your legislation.

Unless he needs it to legitimize his destruction of America plan and then he welcomes it.

Much as I mistrust McConnell, I think there is a chance he may do the right thing here. Mark Levin on his show said that since the text of the agreement is public, congress should go ahead and vote on it because they (in their advise and consent capacity) will never approve it. Makes Obama’s deal legally meaningless. In a way, it may amount to show over substance, but at least congress will have done the right thing.

That is really double negative type convoluted, but I suppose with someone like McConnell, he could be working to save Obama.

Dang, you need to go up there and explain to Mitch. I swear I think a lot of the congressmen/women are as dumb as a box of rocks. Constantly getting played.

I hope you are right, but believe McConnell will fold again, like Boehner, the Old White Boy is a yellow bellied coward.

Makes Obama’s deal legally meaningless.

In the U.S. Meanwhile the other five countries continue with the agreement, the UN eases sanctions and eventually ends them if Iran complies, the Iranians do business and sell oil to Europe and Asia, and there isn't anything the U.S. can do about it.
