Gwyneth Paltrow has vowed to live on just $29 worth of food for a week, after agreeing to take on a charity challenge aimed at raising awareness and funds for New York's food banks.
The 42-year-old posted a picture of her $29 grocery shop on her Twitter account yesterday afternoon, showcasing a range of healthy options, including a variety of fresh vegetables, some brown rice and some black beans.
'This is what $29 gets you at the grocery store - what families on SNAP (food stamps) have to live on for a week,' she wrote. There are those, however, who are already criticizing Gwyneth's attempt to experience what living on food stamps is really like, many suggest that her bizarre food choices demonstrate just how out of touch she is with the average person.
Writer Rebecca Brink highlighted the incredible lack of calories contained in Gwyneth's food choices, suggesting that those people living on SNAP benefits would require a lot more sustenance in order to go about their day-to-day lives. 'I know other people are critiquing this already, but this bothers me on a basic level because eight of those 16 items are not calorically significant (sic),' Rebecca wrote.
'People who live on SNAP benefits dont just have to get nutrients, they have to get actual calories, because they tend to have very physical lives, doing service labor and taking care of children and not necessarily being able to afford a car.'
According to The Frisky, the food in Gwyneth's Twitter post contains a total of 7,059 calories, which means the star will be consuming a paltry 1,000 calories per day for the duration of her week-long challenge. That is approximately half of the recommended daily intake for adults suggested by the American Heart Association.

Why won’t this insufferable hag just go away? She should either change her PR staff or consult with them before she goes public with her bubble-headed messages.
Lie. An actual "family" would get that x each family member.
Half-wit liberal attention whore.
will she also spend this challenge time at a trailer park?
Food Snaps? how does I gets me dat?
Because most of those people have never heard of brown rice or fresh anything, including vegetables.
Even at the nearest grocery store-in a town of less than 900-there are a few people who have Lonestar cards/food stamps-I’ve been behind them in the checkout a few times-they are WASP females, over 200 pounds and their carts are loaded up with boxes of instant mac and cheese, frozen fries or tater tots, instant mashed potatoes, maybe a box of frozen breaded chicken, loaves of sliced, white bread. Gallons of ice cream, sodas, and fried stuff from the deli completes their idea of healthy food.
One size does not fit all for calories, either-my job requires physical work, I eat about 1100-1200 calories a day-of fresh, high protein food and my weight is always the same. One of my neighbors/friends is a teacher and on a diet to lose 40 lbs-she is barely doing it with those same 1000 calories.
And Paltrow is just a rich dilettante anyway...
Yep.
Left out of this is that SNAP is a monthly allotment. Spending $150 at a time over a few months can set up a kitchen so that spending only $412 a month wouldn’t be hard. Starting from week 1 with $29 is of course much harder, but those on welfare don’t do that.
You’re correct. Other welfare programs and having young children add a lot of other benefits not ever mention by Gwyntards.
oh, yeah. The ‘conscious uncoupling’ or whatever the hell she called it.
It’s prolly a boost from her regular 1 cal a day postage stamp diet.
Bingo.
People who LIVE on SNAP are missing the point. It's called SUPPLEMENTAL and ASSISTANCE....it's not called "we're gonna buy everything for you."
It's supposed to SUMPLEMENT the $ you spend on food...make up the diff...not pay for it all.
Yeah, but only for a week. That's a vacation. Heck, to the hollyweird types that's a "cleansing" or some such rubbish. It is very, very different when that is your world every week.
“They gave us more than we could spend. We literally could have had steak and lobster once a week.”
So where are they getting this “$29 worth of food for a week”?
those two large homes seem like a pretty massive carbon footprint to me!!
“So where are they getting this $29 worth of food for a week?”
They LIED
I haven’t seen the steaks or shrimp go on food stamps out here-but when I worked in the city and stopped for groceries on the way home, I saw big ol’ heifers with the Lonestar cards with the steaks and shrimp that I can’t afford in the basket-made me want to go off on them...
Wow, has anyone ever been behind one of them in the grocery store and see what they buy? Nothing nutritious, I tell you. Snacks, soda, cake, etc. At least my piddly $ 100.00 every two weeks buys FOOD.
“In a second tweet posted yesterday, she said of the challenge: ‘We’re walking in their shoes to see how far we get.’”
In thirty seconds time she said,
I want to live like common people,
I want to do whatever common people do,
I want to sleep with common people,
I want to sleep with common people,
Like you.
Well what else could I do
I said “I’ll see what I can do.”
I took her to a supermarket,
I don’t know why,
But I had to start it somewhere,
So it started there.
I said pretend you’ve got no money,
She just laughed and said,
“Oh you’re so funny.”
I said “Yeah?”
Well I can’t see anyone else smiling in here.
But she didn’t understand,
She just smiled and held my hand.
Rent a flat above a shop,
Cut your hair and get a job.
Smoke some fags and play some pool,
Pretend you never went to school.
But still you’ll never get it right,
‘Cause when you’re laid in bed at night,
Watching roaches climb the wall,
If you called your Dad he could stop it all.
Sing along with the common people,
Sing along and it might just get you through.
Laugh along with the common people,
Laugh along even though they’re laughing at you,
And the stupid things that you do.
Because you think that poor is cool.
