The last I read (according to BBC News) was around 565 dead—and the death toll may go much higher, due to a number of historic buildings being destroyed, too.

This is horribly ironic, as when I read about the Chinese planning a tunnel under Mt Everest it was the assurance of such earthquakes that came to mind...Mt Everest & the Himalayas are still being pushed upward; I await the data on how much higher the range is today.

Last I saw it was over 700, and counting. Before it’s done, this may well rank up with the ‘04 tsunami in terms of lives lost.

A 7.9 earthquake is a true nightmare.
The Sylmar and Northridge quakes in California were big enough at 6.7
