Former Romney finance director courting challenger to Sen. Mike Lee

SALT LAKE CITY — The man responsible for raising nearly $1 billion for Mitt Romney's last presidential race is trying to talk a Provo business executive into running against Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah.

Spencer Zwick told KSL News he wants to see Alex Dunn, president of Vivint Inc., who worked on Romney's 2002 campaign for governor of Massachusetts and served on his gubernatorial staff, take on Lee in a GOP primary in 2016.

"I am not out actively trying to find people to run against Mike Lee. This is specific to Alex Dunn. I hope Alex will consider getting in the race," the Boston-based Zwick said, promising that if Dunn runs, he'll help in the race.

Dunn, a graduate of Brigham Young University, confirmed he's considering a run against the first-term senator.

"I've been having discussions with a group of people who are encouraging me to run for Senate," Dunn said in a statement issued through Vivint, a home automation services company.

Lee's chief of staff, Boyd Matheson, said the senator is focused on his agenda, not his re-election.

"He is so focused on an agenda that is helping Utah families that he is not concerned and not looking at who might be thinking about thinking about running against him," Matheson said.

GOP's problem with Lee

Zwick, who worked with Romney since the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City and was his campaign's national finance director, said Lee is "a very smart guy" but his role in the 2013 federal government shutdown hurt the GOP.

"Watching that didn't make me proud to have him associated with a party I love and believe needs to be a growing tent and not shrinking," Zwick said of Lee's fight against President Barack Obama's health care law that resulted in the shutdown.

There aren’t enough conservatives right now to sway votes, but the GOP will put time and money into taking just those few out, when they won’t put that kind of time and money into opposing their supposed opponents, the left. MS taught us that it’s conservatives against the establishment, which is made of both the Rs and the Ds.

but his role in the 2013 federal government shutdown hurt the GOP.

Yeah, it hurt the GOP so bad that they won a landslide in 2014.

I HATE these damn bloodsucking GOP consultants and strategists who don't know s--t from s--t.

I will do anything within my power to help Lee win re-election. I am sick of the false argument that the shutdown hurt the GOP. The GOP hurts the GOP.

My hubby & I were caught in the shutdown job-wise. We didn't get our pay back after it was over, like most federal workers did, but it was still the thing to do! Lee is not perfect, but he's better than most.

If you are a conservative & live in Utah, support Mike Lee with money donations, plus volunteer to help work his campaign. Conservatives nationwide can help through the Senate Conservatives fund/PAC.

We conservatives have plenty of opinions, but have to get active more if we want a good America for our grandchildren to live in.

This proves that many of us were right - the Romney campaign saw conservatives as a bigger enemy than the Democrats.

“The gop-e is also against anyone who is anti-amnesty.”

And in this instance, this is the Mormon Church acting just like the Catholics promoting Utah as Mexico del Norte. They are both a disgrace and we would be better off without both of them.

The entire conservative vs GOP struggle is about amnesty.
The Cheap Labor Express has spent millions, probably billions, to kill the tea party and block conservatives from being elected. The GOP must deliver for their masters.

They have had some set backs with Cruz and Lee winning and Dave Brat taking out the weasel Eric Cantor, but they have had more success at turning many we thought were on our side when we voted for them. We need to keep voting out cheap labor importers.

Until they get amnesty passed we still have a fighting chance. It is the linchpin that will seal our fate.
