Michelle O: Museums intimidate minorities

First Lady Michelle Obama suggested at an opening of the new $420 million Whitney Museum in New York City that minorities rarely feel welcome at such venues.

“You see, there are so many kids in this country who look at places like museums and concert halls and other cultural centers and they think to themselves, ‘well, that’s not a place for me, for someone who looks like me, for someone who comes from my neighborhood.’”

She then said she could “guarantee you that right now, there are kids living less than a mile from here who would never in a million years dream that they would be welcome in this museum,” the Daily Caller reported.

And how does she know that?

“Growing up on the South Side of Chicago,” Obama said, “I was one of those kids myself. So I know that feeling of not belonging in a place like this. And today, as first lady, I know how that feeling limits the horizons of far too many of our young people.”

Obama also said she and her husband have taken that view to heart in the White House, and tried to set aside specific times to host those who may not see themselves as fitting into the exclusive surroundings.

“The message we’re trying to send is simple. We’re telling our young people, the White House is your house,” she said. “You belong here as much as anyone else in this country. We’re telling them, make yourselves at home...

Sheet, I;d rather be homeless and living in the gutter than live in that haunted house. I heard there’s a brain-dead zombie who requires a teleprompter to get by..

What an idiot. I’ve read this story before and it saddens me to think that even during my lifetime, someone like Pat Nixon was First Lady and who was very much liked and respected by many Americans. Nowadays, it’s the Wookie. Pathetic, big time.

You know what intimidates me ?

Poolrooms in the ghetto.
Parking lots of Section 8 Housing.
Downtown, any large city, after dark.
Any street named Martin Luther Boulevard.

It’s a house of horror with these 2 racist clowns inhabiting it. No thanks, I’d rather sleep in the middle of Baltimore.

Oh yea, they’re soooo intimidated by museums. She does not know whereof she speaketh. Never bothered to check attendance at the several large museums in big cities. They do mark the ethnic/race makeup of visitors to satisfy government grants.

What sector of minorities is she talking about? I know I've seen plenty of minorities at some of my trips to the Ballet, Museums of Natural history, Orchestras, plays, etc.

I was raised very poor economically, but my Mom scraped enough together to send me to ballet and piano classes. She felt it necessary to instill a bit of culture in us kids, even though we might "feel out of place". It's all about parenting choices.

Really stupid. I spent the first 13 years of my life in Chicago and loved its great museums. I never noticed they were frequented only by white people. And this was in the 40s and early 50s!

Michelle went to Princeton.

Michelle's mother made sure her daughter studied ballet.

Michelle's mother undoubtedly took her children to more than one museum.

How much do you wanna bet?
